Early in the pre-campaign for the 2008 White House, New York ex-Mayor Giuliani was regarded by those who hate him as one of those gaudy soap bubbles that survives just long enough for you to yell to your brother to hurry on into the bathroom and take a look; but you're confident it will pop and leave a little moist remembrance on the white tile floor without you needing to blow it or poke it.
That was many months ago, and far from popping, the Giuliani candidacy is gaining, sinking mud-cleats into solid political support and grabbing traction. Why? I think I know. And if I'm right it will be the first time I've really learned from history. Never too late.

“Paul is a surrender monkey.”
I share your sentiments! It can’t be said too many times!
Traction? Nope. Thompson and Hunter are gaining traction, much to the chagrin of the RNC, who see Rudy as their annointed one.
Rudy's mayoral politics have left him too dirty to be president. I mean, how many mafia connected cabinet officers would he appoint as president, like he tried with his nominee for Homeland Security Cheif, who now has been forced to leave the USA and cool his jets as a security consultant in Saudi Arabia?
No Rudy ain't gonna wash with the rank and file of the Republican party, who at convention time, will take their party back from the RINO Rooting RNC bean pushers.
Rudy reminds me of a former RNC annointee, Bob Dole. The party faithful went along with it and look what happened. Nope: its going to be Thompson/Hunter on the ticket.
And one more surprise. As Karl Rove has indicated, Hillary also will not be able to achieve the nomination of her party. She alo has a record which causes the American public to distrust her. If she had divorced BJ Clinton, she might have had a chance, but NOPE.
Joe Leiberman has a better chance of achieving the nomination of the Dem party, than Hillary Clinton, who has positioned herself with the far left, and now cannot ressurect herself as a seemingly moderate candidate. Also Hillary's record as a Congress Woman is abysmal. She achieved no significant legislation during her tenure as the "respected" Congresswoman from New York.
Well we at Free Republic cannot have that. Quick, someone call Rudy a RINO or something..
why would he need to gain traction if he is already at the top?
He should be “expanding his lead” not “gaining traction.”
NOBODY should be gaining on him, least of all an undeclared candidate.
So with reality in contrast with spin, Guiliani seems to be trying to brace for a real race in what was promised to be a cakewalk for him. (why the new ad firm, the recent immigration flip flop..)
And while you’re at it, somebody please call me a taxicab.
pro abort, pro homo. Unqualified to be President.
Paul is a surrender monkey......Paul is a surrender monkey......Paul is a surrender monkeeeeeeee!!!!!!! :-)
Last time for Gov the pro-life candidate that I supported lost in the primary to a pro abortion candidate. So I should throw my vote away to a candidate that has no chance or vote for a Dem?
Pray for W and Our Troops
Exactly, that's why I could never vote for Rudy Giuliani.
There is no difference between them... they both wear skirts... like the homos, hate guns and love illegals...
I will vote for “Bullwinkle” if that is the two choices.
The RNC hacks in D.C. better get a clue...
Funny how two conservatives, you and I, can be poles apart.
The most ambitious and futile manipulation in American political life is the Left’s attempt to pretend other issues rank right up there with terrorism. They don’t.
The author nails it right there. And the anti-Rudy contingent still doesnt understand this.
The anti-Rudy contingent is praying for an electoral white knight. It aint gonna happen.
This is what we got: Hunter is going nowhere. Thompson is acting like Hamlet and losing critical time and frankly has a thin resume and no executive experience. Romney proven succesful executive but is a bit slick and flippy floppy. Rudy is a proven great executive but wrong on all the social issues.
Conclusion: Bitch and whine and vote third party, thereby granting Saint Hiliary the presidency.
Or take Rudy at his word that he will appoint strict contructionists to the bench.
Frankly, that's the shallowest thing I've ever read.
“Boy this is a barf alert of biblical porprotions.”
No doubt about that.
His popularity is wanning. This redefines the word, b.s..
We don’t need Rudy’s social liberal values.
It is willing to fight terrorists and put crooks in jail, which D's aren't.
If it came down to Rudy vs Hillary, I would vote for Rudy.
I'd rather vote for Romney, who is closer to my ideals except for that really hard lump to swallow of his ignorance about the Second Amendment, and no military service that would have taught him why we have the Second Amendment. He's done a lot of studying and has toughened up alot since he went wishy washy running for governor of Massachusetts (crazy, crazy place to survive in politics.)
New York is also a crazy place to survive in politics, but I agree Rudy's personal morals also took a beating there, not just his political principles.
If only Fred knew how to plan ahead and had the energy to run a vigorous campaign. I think his campaign is a pipedream that is going to end in a puff of smoke, proving he was a great Senator and is a great human being who just doesn't have the stamina and foresight and organizational skills needed in a President.
Everyone else is an also-ran, IMO. McCain is running on the media sycophant ticket, not the Republican one.
Barry Farber was a Conservative Radio talk show host long before many FReepers were born. He started on WINS in NYC as the only talk show on an all music radio station in 1960, and has been broadcasting ever since.
He is a rock solid Conervative, from the South, and Jewish to boot. He also speaks , in one degree or another, 25 languages!
Barry knows a lot about politics; I wouldn’t be so fast to dismiss his observations and opinions.
Fred will squash Rudy on Sept. 5.
