ST. PAUL, Minn. — A security video from an apartment hallway shows at least 10 witnesses ignored a woman's cries for help for more than an hour as a man beat and sexually assaulted her, prosecutors in Minnesota said.

The surveillance video clearly showed men and women looking out their apartment doors or starting to walk down the hallway before retreating as the woman was assaulted for nearly 90 minutes, police spokesman Tom Walsh said.

We don’t. People should just butt in, even if it’s just your hands.

I agree.
And hope I'd react correctly in such a situation.

But I lived long enough in Los Angeles...and heard enough stories
of people being carved up with knives.
Or the machetes of some of our "immigrants".
I'd like to at least have a gun to fire in the ground (police-approved
practice) to serve notice that the perp should just move along.

Places like MN brainwash enough folks into thinking they should
carry "evil" guns...and should "let the police take care of it".

I admit that my opinion is colored by having a couple of friends
that disuaded thugs by just making it clear they had hand-cannons
in hand in case a situation "was taken to the next level".

“Putting myself in that hallway, wearing my .45, ordering the man to stop... and if he does nothing? Hmm...

Would I actually be able to take the next step?”

if your’e asking “would I be able to shoot him?”,you wouldn’t have to. Cowardly bastards like that, who attack innocent women or children, rarely are man enough to stand up to a brave man with a pistol aimed directly at him.
If he came at you, unarmed and intent on hurting you, secure your weapon and KICK HIS ASS! Adrenaline & testosterone would seal his fate. You’d win. And,that’s not to say that others wouldn’t come running to get their licks in once you got the guy down on the ground. By then the cops might just be there. End of conflict.

I guess it depends on your neighborhood.  Remember a few months ago there was a guy who burst into his neighbors apartment with a katana, thinking there was a sex attack going on when it turned out that the neighbor was just watching bondage and domination porn with his TV turned up too loud.

Thank you for the information about the Kitty Genovese murder.

As you say, another NYT fabrication and hatchet job.

Before we criticize these people, let's consider this . . .

If someone came to the assistance of this woman and beat this guy senseless with a bat, there's a good chance that the Good Samaritan would be prosecuted to the full extent of the law -- and this video tape would be part of the prosecution's evidence.

That particular neighborhood isn’t known as a hotbed of conservatism.

Lets look at the entire city of St. Paul, Minnesota.

St. Paul Minnesota has more crime in 5 of the 7 major crime categories than does Los Angeles, Ca.

St. Paul and Los Angeles Comparative Crime Ratios per 100,000 People

Then i’d take my day in court. I’ve brought out a baseball bat before, but luckily didn’t have to use it.

Back when I lived in NYC there was a hallway altercation in my building. I was an officer in the tenant’s association and we had trouble with these people before. So I responded with a baseball bat in hand, arriving the same time as NYPD did. I never got to use the bat but I did get arrested for having it.

“Residents on the second floor of Afton View Apartments weren’t talking much Thursday afternoon. One man wouldn’t come to his door. A young woman, with children surrounding her, said: “I don’t know anything.”

Though the building’s resident manager wouldn’t provide demographic breakdowns, the tenant list in the entryway is dominated by Somali surnames — a segment of St. Paul’s population that police say is often reluctant to report crimes.

That reluctance is of such concern to police officials that Chief John Harrington has been meeting monthly with Somali elders to encourage community cooperation in criminal matters, police spokesman Tom Walsh said Thursday.

Through Wednesday night, the building in the 300 block of Winthrop Street had generated 63 police incident reports this year, with 19 involving various types of disturbances and 11 being 911 hangup calls.”

Yes, but

a) that doesn’t erase the moral obligation;

b) while definitely the possibility of being aggitating, it’s unlikely that once it was discovered a rape was occurring and the perp was being beaten for it, you’d be in jail. Oftentimes I daresay people are let off completely without charges; only “pending investigation” at the time of crime.

The more liberal a place is, the less caring a place is, period.

I agree in a general way with your statement, but it paints Minnesota with too broad of a brush.

Minnesota (and Wisconsin) are liberal states, but primarily in the bigger cities where the bastions of liberal thought are force fed to the voting college kids. Go to the smaller towns and you'd be impressed with the devotion to God, country, and family.

In these smaller towns, if you are in need, just go to any of the local churches or parishes and they'll help you out. (I know. I grew up in a small town in Minnesota, and my family survived through tough times because of the kindness of neighbors and churches.) So when you paint Minnesota as an uncaring State, I have to take exception to that.

What I think happens is that in the bigger cities, the average liberal does care about the less fortunate, but they want the government to be the agent of help, where as the conservative would rather have other smaller institutions (or themselves) help the poor.

When the government gets put in charge of the care of others, you are right, they DON'T care about who they service. When a church takes care of you, it's personal and not just a service to you but a service for God. The other thing about a church helping you out, is there is a feeling of indebtedness that one works to pay off. When it's the government that treats you, there is no feeling of indebtedness.

As a side note, I love downtown St. Paul. It's beautiful. The Mall of America is also worth a visit now and then. However, the last time I was driving around the Twin cities, I was amazed at the transformation of some of the outlying neighborhoods. Many, many, many more Hispanic communities then I remember from the '70's and '80's!

If you visit Minnesota, visit the smaller towns. Places like Ely, Lake City, Lanesboro, and Winona are beautiful and quite friendly. (Sadly, the Winona area has recently been hit with serious flooding and there are alot of people who have lost everything. Pray for them.)

Sincerely

I know its Minneapolis/St Paul in Minnesota, just like its Madison in Wisconsin.

Outside of Madison WI is a salt of the earth state.
