ASHINGTON -- Sen. John W. Warner (R-Va.), the influential former chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, on Thursday urged President Bush to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq to send a message that the United States is running out of patience with the government in Baghdad.
Warner, who has been critical of the troop buildup ordered by Bush in January, said he was not ready to back a Democratic-led effort in Congress to order withdrawals. However, his blunt assessment of the Iraqi government's performance could lead to an erosion of GOP support for the President's war strategy at a crucial time.
A handful of Republican senators already have called on Bush to change his strategy. With Congress scheduled to receive a progress report on the war in mid-September, Democrats are preparing to mount a new effort to set a timetable for troop withdrawals.

Sen. John Warner on Thursday offered his darkest assessment yet of Iraq, saying the war there was "drifting sideways" without a commitment from its government to disarm militias.

November 15, 2005 Senate Republicans Pushing for a Plan on Ending the War in Iraq By CARL HULSE
WASHINGTON, Nov. 14 - In a sign of increasing unease among Congressional Republicans over the war in Iraq, the Senate is to consider on Tuesday a Republican proposal that calls for Iraqi forces to take the lead next year in securing the nation and for the Bush administration to lay out its strategy for ending the war....The proposal on the Iraq war, from Senator Bill Frist, the majority leader, and Senator John W. Warner, Republican of Virginia, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, would require the administration to provide extensive new quarterly reports to Congress on subjects like progress in bringing in other countries to help stabilize Iraq. The other appeals related to Iraq are nonbinding and express the position of the Senate.

So it's not like this is some new, startling change in Warner's position.

The big media LIE being pushed here is that Warner’s statement represents something new. Paraphrasing CBS news, for example, “a long time supporter of the president’s policy has now changed his position.”
Warner turned yellow several months ago, of course.
“influential former chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee”
I stopped reading right there.....not interested in anything he says except he’s going to retire.
I saw him. The “olds” can be pitiful.
Warner is turning out to be someone who needs to go in a state where he can be kicked out. I think Jim Gilmore would make a good replacement for this old bag of crap.
I think there is a rush to run in fron of the parade.
We ARE eventually going to leave, whether it is today or 50 years from today.
For his own reasons Warner is hedging his bets to do “I told you so.”
Warner could just as easily demanded night follow day.
Perhaps during the next solar eclipse he could point to the sky and demand the sun come back.
He is another dinosaur ready for Byrdland.
Even the outgoing Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is a terrorist-loving American-hating traitor who wants us dead or converted to Islam!

WASHINGTON The departing chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is expected to advise President Bush to reduce the U.S. force in Iraq next year by almost half.
Administration and military officials say Marine Gen. Peter Pace is likely to convey concerns that keeping a force of more than 100,000 troops in Iraq through 2008 would severely strain the military.
This assessment could collide with one being prepared by the U.S. commander in Iraq, Army Gen. David Petraeus, calling for the U.S. to maintain higher troop levels for the next year and beyond.
Pace’s recommendations reflect the views of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which initially expressed skepticism in private about the strategy ordered by Bush and directed by Petraeus before publicly backing it.
My disrespect for Warner goes back to his marriage to Ms. Taylor. Granted, she had her problems — obesity, pills, booze, whatever - - but he was no help. In fact, he was hurtful. His comments — calling her something like my little heifer — really nice. The Apostle Paul urged men to love their wives and be neither disrespectful toward them nor harsh. I guess Mr. Warner didn’t get that message. He was disloyal, mean, insensitve and just a general POS during that marriage. I guess that kind of disrespect and disloyalty carries over into his professional life as well. When he’s gone from the Senate, I won’t miss him.
