U.S. to leave Cheyenne even as Russia flexes muscle

CHEYENNE MOUNTAIN, Colo. (Reuters) - The U.S. military will move its secure command center from deep inside Cheyenne Mountain even as Russia revives military maneuvers that led America to burrow under the rock almost 50 years ago.

" It will combine operations now divided between Cheyenne and Peterson, helping the commander to receive information and respond to crises or attacks more quickly, Renuart said. It will not, however, save money as the military promised, congressional investigators have shown."

I'm wincing at this article. Sooner or later it will happen. Its just common sense to upgrade the Cheyenne facility to house everything in one mountain. Never mind the cost.

Having a functioning command post survive nuke can mean the difference in winning a war.

Maybe now that they’ll be out of Cheyenne they can quietly upgrade it. It’s always a lot easier to do a major renovation when there’s nobody home.

It really does’nt matter whether the Air Force stays in Cheyenne mountain or go’s.With the accuracy of todays ICBM’s even being buried beneath that mountain won’t provide much protection for a nuclear detonation.

When it was first proposed the cost was 35-50 million dollars, The local news floating around has that figure to between 10-14 Billion dollars. At that price it will stay right where it is for a long long time.

There is one defensive structure that is pretty immune from attack, but instead of having a single headquarters it might have hundreds. It is like distributed computing, except it is distributed command and control. You cannot destroy a *virtual* command center, unless you destroy every single one of its nodes. And the more that are functional, the more powerful it is.

Connected by vast distances of dedicated fiber optic cable, only fully functional and authenticated nodes are part of the system. Even a massive EMP burst over the US will not take down all of them. And disconnected nodes should be rapidly able to go to backup systems and return to function.

There can even be nodes not in the US proper, but able to access all critical functions of the defense system.
