my girlfriend consumes 1000 calories a day and does 30 minutes of cardio on a elliptical and she has been at it for 4 months and hasn’t lost more than 5 lbs. she has hyper or hypo thyroid issues? I swear she drinks water by the gallon and eats like a bird, does weights and cardio and can’t loose hardly any weight at all. I think she weights about 150 and is 5 feet tall. It is sad to see her work so hard and deprive herself of so much for such dismal results. Is there nothing they can do for a bad thyroid....the meds don’t seem to help at all although she says if she stops taking them she gains weight...the math just doesn’t add up!
Is she taking artificial or natural thyroid?? There are some people for whom the synthetic simply doesn't work. Switching to animal-derived (I think Armour) helps in some cases. Also, she may be lacking nutritional thyroid co-factors needed to get full benefit of the hormone.
Has she tried doing her 30 minutes of cardio on an elliptical using an HIIT routine? Studies show that using an HIIT routine is more effective at burning fat and the body continues to burn fat for hours afterward.
She’s probably not actually eating enough. If you eat too little your body goes into starvation survival mode, part of which is reducing your metabolic rate to cut down on the calories you burn, which of course is exactly what a person trying to lose weight doesn’t want to do. Of course thyroid conditions complicate everything. She just might be fighting genetics, which is a battle you can never win.
Thanks for commenting. And thanks for seeing the wonderful woman your girlfriend is, rather than just a fat person. Too bad the people who are being so cruel on this thread will never know how nice those people like your girlfriend and I are. But then we don’t bother with shallow folks anyway.
She might want to try laser liposuction. It’s the non-penetrative answer to weight loss surgery.
She should up her calories, up her fat, and lower her carbs. Rotate workouts - cardio one day, strength training the next. She’ll see the scale move and she’ll probably feel a lot better. Upping calories and fat seems counterintuitive when trying to lose weight, but really, it’s the carbs that matter. Plus she won’t feel like she’s dieting if she ups her fat intake.
Bless her efforts!!!
1. She should lift weights 3 days a week. She will lose inches and it is better for her bones.
2. She is not eating enough. Someone else mentioned she is in starvation mode. Not healthy.
3. Have her eliminate all sugar, and all refined flour. She will lose weight. Check out the no sugar, no flour diet.
Sounds like your girlfriend needs a complete endocrine workup. It may not be the thyroid. My wife had similar problems and the root cause turned out to be Cushing’s Disease - which is caused by a pituitary tumor that overstimulates the adrenal glands.
I have a teenager in my house who is under 5 feet and weighs far more. I would LOVE IT if she was "only" 150 lbs. 150 lbs. may not be "optimal", but for your girl friend it may be normal. Also, at her height and bone structure, she may be still eating too much to lose weight.
The answer I might suggest to you is that perhaps your girlfriend would be far heavier if she ate what you feel she is being deprived. I know other women/men with thyroid issues. Yes, it does affect the processing of food in the body, but most obesity issues are not glandular issues or organ failures. For the vast majority of individuals who are obese, the issue is eating too much too often, and eating the wrong foods.
We are convinced that if we do not get to eat the things that others do that we are somehow deprived. Perhaps that more than anything might help to define the problem with obesity.

I’ll bet she’s hiding the Twinkies and the Ho-ho’s in one of her cabinets. Take a look. Pizza boxes in the trash can?
Tell her to go to www.stopthethyroidmadness.com and read the stuff there. You’d be surprised what you will find. I did. Ordered the tests for myself and hubby but haven’t gotten results back yet.
