Financial pressures force Snow departure
By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent
WASHINGTON - White House press secretary Tony Snow said Friday he'll leave sometime before the end of the Bush presidency because of financial pressures.
He declined to say when he would depart, but that, "I'm going to stay as long as I can."
The 52-year-old Snow, the father of three children, earns $168,000 as an assistant to the president but made considerably more as a conservative pundit and syndicated talk-show host on Fox News Radio. He was named press secretary on April 26, 2006.
The White House has been shaken by the resignations of some of President Bush's closest aides. Political strategist Karl Rove announced Monday that he would leave at the end of the month. Longtime Bush adviser Dan Bartlett left earlier this year and Andrew Card left earlier as Bush's chief of staff.
Bush's term ends on Jan. 20, 2009.
"I will not be able to make it to the end of this administration, just financially," Snow said. "This job has been such a pleasant surprise in how much I like it. I love it."
Snow has been undergoing chemotherapy after doctors discovered a recurrence of colon cancer in March. He said the last of eight scheduled chemotherapy treatments would be on Friday. On Monday he will have a CAT scan to evaluate his progress.
You should probably tell “VOYAGER” this too. This poster is spewing the same thing as other “immigration” posters are!
Ditto.
Well said.
Thanks for your messages from Tony! I hope he feels well loved by all the hoopla about his supposed leaving! :) I am so glad that you have contact with him and can keep us informed!
God Bless you!
Shaken? I don't think so. Nonetheless, I wish Tony well, hope he can get into complete remission of his cancer, and that he can make some good money for his family.
Very well said!
That was my thinking as well. You know he probably can't get life insurance, so what they will have is what he can earn.
I hope I am wrong.
168k isn’t really alot to live in DC or almost anywhere on the east coast. I think I read that Tony has college age kids so tuition might be a huge expense too along with health concerns. I’m hoping maybe some publishing house will give him a gigantic advance on a future book he may write and he could continue to the end of the term.
when colon cancer comes back again....there is a strong likelihood of metastasizing to liver and beyond pretty quick
chemo is more to slow it down for a while at best
cancer is either in remission or growing....no in between ...at least not for long
even though my views took a serious divergence from his, I sure pray he gets the best outcome God can grant him for hisself and his loved ones
he has every right to get his house in order for his family and his earning peak is now
not unless the premium equals the policy value....in other words no
I think Tony Snow is dying, sad and god bless. He is fighting a tough & lost battle. It has noting to do with money.
He has made the ultimate sacrifice to this country, family and the office of the President. He will be remindered as a SAINT, God love him. I hope all the President’s Men could all be like Tony!
Tony Snow can make 10 times his salary on the speaking circuit
As one of the border hawks (and somebody who absolutely WILL NOT vote for anybody who isn’t one), I’ve got to agree with you.
Seeing the federal government completely abdicate its responsibility is frustrating. But BDS is not the answer. Trashing our ailing friend Tony Snow is not the answer. There is a time and place for that subject, and it’s not this thread.
I wish the best for Tony and his family. It’s undoubtedly been a rough ride but he has persevered and served his country well. Good luck.
One needs a long hot shower and a pumice pad after visiting either of those sad places.
Oh, and burn the kimono as well...
Snow is still under cancer treatment. While finances may enter into this, it's hard for me to classify this as a real hardship case.
This appears like an attempt to embarass Snow to the max, as if he were dead broke or something.
As for this administration being shaken, that's as preposterous as it would have been to say the same thing when Clinton's rats fled the sinking ship in the last few years of his presidency.
People always leave about this stage of the process. Of course we can't expect a company as amaturish as AP to be able to recall prior administrations. I doubt they have anyone on staff that was out of junior high during the Clinton Administration, by the quality of reporting these days.
Naive little lamb. Financial might be one of the reasons, but not all the reasons.
My family income is about 68K a year. If I were to live on 20K for two years, it would be tough. Tony went from over a million to a measily 168K. That must be tough. I wish him the best at making as much money for his family as possible.
