Iran cleric warns US not to pick on Guards
Herald Sun ^ | 18 August 2007

A SENIOR Iranian cleric said on Friday that plans by the US to designate Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps as a foreign terrorist group invited a fight with the Iranian nation which America could not win.

“Americans should know that in this field, as with nuclear energy, they are dealing with the whole nation,” Ahmad Khatami told worshippers at Friday prayers in Tehran.

"And the great nation of Iran will never abandon its revolutionary people.

“Americans should know that if they act madly in this regard, they would be entering a swamp they won't be able to get out of,” the conservative cleric said in a speech that was broadcast live on the radio.

Mr Khatami is a member of the Assembly of Experts, an influential clerical body which has the power to appoint or dismiss Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

US officials said on Wednesday the US may soon name the Revolutionary Guard as a foreign terrorist group, reflecting frustration over Tehran's nuclear program and suspected role in Iraqi violence.

The designation would be the first time the US has placed the armed forces of any sovereign government on its list of terrorist organisations and would allow Washington to target the Guards' finances.

We need to help the revolutionaries in Iran to overthrow the government. Then, we should strike their nuclear facilities.

I think this is a rather clever end run around that whole UN-says-we-can’t-declare-war-on-another-government thing. Now we can MOAB their goat-raping fannies, and Bush can just bat his baby blues at the UN and say, “We were hitting a known terrorist operation, but we jest LUUUV Iran...”

The mullahs are clinging to power courtesy of Iran’s military. Destroy the Armed Forces, and the mullahs will be lynched in the streets.

Isn't that the same thing Emperor Hirohito said 62 years ago in August 1945? Oops.

It actually is very intruiging that we are about to declare the IRGC a terrorist organization. First, it hints at us becoming more aggressive with Iran. But more importantly, the IRGC is believed to be the largest group (branch?) of Iran's military. The equivalent would be someone listing the U.S. Marines as a terrorist organization.

I'm wondering if the reason for this is to make sure when we attack Iran it is legal to do so, even though no actual declaration of war against Iran has been made. The declaration of war against the Taliban after 9/11 included terrorist organizations across the planet, and it gives the Commander-in-Chief broad authority on who he can target without going to Congress.

The declaration of war against the Taliban after 9/11

In the interest of historical purity: There was no USA Declaration of War on the Taliban.

Hey, I have to go, the library is closing, but I strongly remember that in 2002, Congress passed a conditional declaration of war on Iraq.

Does that count?

No, that would not count even if it did happen. Most of the problems with the Dems and the MSM concerned with the War on Terrorists of Global Reach are due directly to the lack of a Declaration of War.
