Sanctuary Cities ((Essay by Fred Thomspon)

If you listen to folks who oppose immigration and border enforcement, you get the feeling they think we put locks on our doors to keep everybody out. The truth is we have locks so we can choose who comes in.

An example of what happens when we don’t make the choice took place August 4th when three Newark, New Jersey, college students with great promise were executed, gangland style. The killers’ ringleader was apparently an illegal alien indicted twice in 2007 for felonies, including the rape of a kindergarten-aged girl.

Why would such a person be set free instead of being handed over to authorities for deportation? The answer is that Newark is a “sanctuary city” which bans cooperation between local officials and federal immigration officials. More than 60 sanctuary zones, including 30 of America’s largest cities, provide a national networked haven for foreign and organized criminals who recruit and operate outside those areas as well. These sanctuaries include Cambridge, Massachusetts; Los Angeles, California; Detroit, Michigan; Chicago, Illinois; Austin and Houston, Texas; Denver, Colorado; and New York City.

The consequences of “sanctuary cities” may be most obvious in the city that became the first in 1979 — Los Angeles. According to the Center for Immigration Studies, a confidential California Department of Justice study from the mid-1990’s showed then that at least 60 percent of the members of L.A.’s most violent gangs, with membership in the tens of thousands, were illegal aliens. Of all outstanding murder warrants in Los Angeles, 95 percent are for illegal aliens. Frustrated police say they are powerless to pick up even well-known, previously deported felons.

I'm not buying this. Police seem to find a reason if they want to. This is a CYA statement, in my opinion.

Certain parts of the hierarchy are powerless, because others would rather spend their time going after low-risk revenue tickets than going after crooks who might actually shoot at them.

To be sure, there are many good people in law enforcement, but not always enough to push things where they need to go.

Newark is immune from such a lawsuit (it has sovereign immunity for legislative actions). Such a lawsuit would be tossed out on summary judgment.

Fred’s big man in the Senate was Mc Kennedy (king of amnesty and former candidate for President) What we need from Fred is contrition.

What a wonderful find. I am glad you brought that up. This is what I found on the list of Santuary Cities:

San Antonio, TX [Note: The Sanctuary status of San Antonio is disputed, being researched.] Says this list was last updated 8/12/07.

I am from Texas, although not originally from Houston and I find this remarkable. As long as I can remember, which is a long, long time, San Antonio has always had a very noticable Mexican flavor.

What you found may be worth looking into as San Antonio may be changing.

Speaking of the scumbag mayor, did you see him at the news conference announcing the arrests? He outright declared that he was really aggravated, upset and angry. I knew Newark is a sanctuary city and my first thought was he’s trying to sidestep the blame with a self righteous stance. This is what the ignorant voters get when they elect a democrat.

Unfortunately, it is my understanding that being here illegally is merely a misdemeanor and doesn’t even carry a required fine.

But people treat felonious production of identification, as if it were just a mere school yard prank, and then get all emotional, steeped in entitlement and victimhood, when WE the PEOPLE of the United States quite rightly, justly and reasonably demand that laws such as prohibition of using false identification, are actully enforced.

You can see it here, this shows their mindset:

"Those who go to work with phony documents, you have these two ways out." (sic)

Sanctuary Cities...
1. They get what they deserve in terms of murder and mayhem by their
beloved crimaliens.

And

2. They get what they don’t deserve in terms of continued FEDERAL DOLLARS
from scads of sane cities that refuse to give succor to illegal
immigrant thugs.

I agree with you that the ideas sound “authentic.” I just mean that Fred doesn’t Google his own documentation and facts, like I have to do for every single weekly column for 560 weeks. (But who’s counting?)

“There may only be the military solution.”

How about this four-part solution:

1. A one-year mandatory federal prison sentence for employing an illegal

2. A one-year mandatory federal prison sentence for anyone providing tax money or taxpayer-paid services, including education and medical (except for the case of a bona fide life-threatening emergency) to an illegal.

3. Revocation of all budgeted federal moneys designated for the support any city or state that designates itself as a “sanctuary” for illegals, regardless if that designation is an official legislative act, or unwritten policy

4. Even if it takes a Constitutional amendment, revoke the US citizenship of anyone born in the United States after 1988 to mother who was in the country illegally.

I don’t see that he has a solution. LA has 31 programs to deal with criminal gangs but none work. General Petraeus may be the only one with a realistic plan.

Programs that deal with criminal gangs don't work because we don't yet have the political will to do what needs to be done. The political will does not yet exist because the general public is not yet aware just how catastrophic are the costs of closing our eyes to illegal immigration and to the violent foreign nationals living among us.

What Thompson is doing here is making a clear, compelling case for why the public needs to make this issue a top priority. As soon as it becomes a top priority of the general public, effective solutions will follow very quickly.

Thompson is very good at addressing the root causes of problems rather than trying to impose flashy but ultimately fleeting band-aid solutions. In this case, the root cause of the immigration problem is a lack of political will, resulting from a lack of widespread and sustained public outrage. He's doing what he can to start to change that.

Hey, someone needs to start a new non-profit, called VIA - Victims of Illegal Aliens.

Then, not only could it compile the stats (numbers of illegals in prisons, etc.), but it could put a Human-American face on the victims. Who needs pictures of Islamofacists blowing off the heads of victims overseas, when we have our uninvited guests doing that right at home, such as in Newark?

The power of the Web and informationTech should be leveraged to draw together the scattered victims, the pain, the reality, to make folks understand that death or rape or DWI-accident or injury or robbery or machete-ing is a real and present risk due to the sheer numbers of illegals.

Gracious! I'd start it myself, but I have the problem that many conservatives face -- busy 25 hours a day providing and caring for the next generation (hey, we're way above the current 2.09 children per female average, so don't look at me about underpopulation issues). But, I don't want to wait until we're a victim, and I don't want more people being victimized.

Frustrating for one who so cherishes the rule of law.

A lot of the illegal immigration would stop if these sanctuary cities cleaned up their lazy disgusting pandering to the left-wing nut cases.

“Sanctuary Cities...

I don’t think that these three dead college kids, or the raped five year-old girl had anything to do with establishing the “sanctuary” city. If the rapists and murders were restricting their violence to those Americans who involved with supporting illegal aliens, that would be an altogether different thing.

“This is what the ignorant voters get when they elect a democrat.”

While I’m in general agreement with you, I also would remind you that not all who have fostered an environment friendly to illegal aliens are Democrats. In fact, some of them have posted on this thread.
