Sanctuary Cities ((Essay by Fred Thomspon)
I'm with Fred ^ | 08/13/07 | Fred D. Thompson

If you listen to folks who oppose immigration and border enforcement, you get the feeling they think we put locks on our doors to keep everybody out. The truth is we have locks so we can choose who comes in.

An example of what happens when we don’t make the choice took place August 4th when three Newark, New Jersey, college students with great promise were executed, gangland style. The killers’ ringleader was apparently an illegal alien indicted twice in 2007 for felonies, including the rape of a kindergarten-aged girl.

Why would such a person be set free instead of being handed over to authorities for deportation? The answer is that Newark is a “sanctuary city” which bans cooperation between local officials and federal immigration officials. More than 60 sanctuary zones, including 30 of America’s largest cities, provide a national networked haven for foreign and organized criminals who recruit and operate outside those areas as well. These sanctuaries include Cambridge, Massachusetts; Los Angeles, California; Detroit, Michigan; Chicago, Illinois; Austin and Houston, Texas; Denver, Colorado; and New York City.

The consequences of “sanctuary cities” may be most obvious in the city that became the first in 1979 — Los Angeles. According to the Center for Immigration Studies, a confidential California Department of Justice study from the mid-1990’s showed then that at least 60 percent of the members of L.A.’s most violent gangs, with membership in the tens of thousands, were illegal aliens. Of all outstanding murder warrants in Los Angeles, 95 percent are for illegal aliens. Frustrated police say they are powerless to pick up even well-known, previously deported felons.

Huh? Does that mean that I don't have to pay local property taxes?

Hi raybbr...it's been a long time. ;^)

I was referring to the enforcement of immigration laws being a federal government responsibility...and that's how Hunley ruled. Even though he's a Clinton appointee, he's doing us a favor because on appeal, we should expect a SCOTUS ruling before the election.

Do you know that the judge in the Hazelton case cited "foreign agreements" in his argument? In other words, the Hazelton laws would violate agreements with mexico. Think of the doors that opens for the terrorists and illegals from all over the world.

Well, being a 'big picture' guy, nobody would want to see Mexico turn into another Cuba or Venezuela...so I can respect trying to honor 'foreign agreements'.

On another note, why should we import millions from one culture and no others?

You know...I was wondering how all these hate-filled posters (not you)would feel if Mexicans were someday under the same government as Cubans...and it's the most logical ending if they're left to fend for themselves.

The group of Cubans who landed in Florida the other day jarred the thought.

It would be comical to see certain Freepers' heads explode if suddenly Mexicans were allowed to stay here under the same standards as Cubans.

Finally, most Hispanics are Christians...so given my choice I'd rather favor them than any other radical customs that have swarmed Europe and England.

Cheers!

Well...take it up with John McCain and the sponsors of the bill addressing the 'new enforcement' regulations.

It's to be amended...thank God!

I'm all for cutting the funding of Sanctuary Cities.

After the thugs and felons are deported, then we can talk about re-instituting the funding.

This will bring an air of cooperation from top to bottom...the peaceful [now legal] resident aliens will register and be provided with their own true tax ID.

“Throw the violent felons out and legalize/recognize the rest as resident aliens.

Fred’s going about this the correct way.”

Oh really? Well you might want to inform the rest of the Fredheads. I can show you countless numbers of posts attacking me, calling me a liar, accusing me of misleading, smearing, misrepresenting...all for pointing out the fact that Fred’s message IS figuring out who is here and giving illegal aliens amnesty.

Come on Kimberly....buck up!

The Fredheads that attack you are people who punch a clock and/or carry a lunchbox.

They have no concept of how our economy runs on the backs of small businesses.

Thank God people like Fred Dalton Thompson and Newt Gingrich...who are coming out swinging against government paralysis...are differentiating between violent illegal criminals and the vast majority who are peacefully living, working and struggling among us.

Some of the more out-of-control Freepers who swarm and attack us are freaking out.

And, I'm glad. Aren't you?

Liberals did the same thing for a whole host of issues from education to highway rules.

I think you ought to use a tagline that says you support Fred Thompson and amnesty for illegal aliens.

Well, I’m a Fredhead, and I freely admit that Fred is in support of giving nonviolent illegals amnesty. So what? What else could be done with so many people?

This article kind of attacks most of the other GOP Presidential candidates by naming sanctuary cities from states where many of the other GOP candidates are from. Including the sanctuary city of Denver even makes Tom Tancredo look bad despite illegal immigration being Tancredo’s top priority issue during his ongoing ‘08 Presidential race. You should also notice in the article than San Diego, where Duncan Hunter is from, is not listed as a sanctuary city, thanks to what Duncan Hunter continues to do there until his present Congressional term is up.

Really? Where did you read Fred saying specifically that he will give amnesty to nonviolent illegals?

I believe Fred has said ENFORCE the current laws on the books and SECURE the borders....resulting attrition will be one effective solution. Tancredo has suggested the same..

He didn't say he would give amnesty to anyone.

But only a person wearing blinders reads into what he's said to mean that he would send them packing like the criminal element among them.

San Antonio may well have a ‘Mexican Flavor’, but it doesn’t mean that comes from illegal immigrants. There have been Spanish speaking people there since before Texas became a state. I’m suspect they don’t like illegal immigrants any more than the ‘Anglos’ do.

There has always been a problem with the current debate in the denial that there is a native Hispanic culture in the US. Hispanic culture is part of the US and has always been a part of the US. Hispanic culture has nothing to do with illegal immigration. It is simply a way some use to divide groups on the issue.

___________________________________________

Asked before...how do you know who the thugs and felons are without waiting for them to kill, rape, assault and then get caught? Do you have an answer? How many new victims will it take?

Re-institute funding for the illegals!? This is pure dem bullcrap.

You DCprofiteer are a closet liberal. But it looks like you're getting ready to come out. Is that it? Are you coming out of the closet with this suggestion?

First, we will need an inventory on how these cities are making money on illegals. There is no line item that says funding for sanctuary cities.

I understand your point.

I was comparing it to how the Feds threatened to withhold highway renovation funds unless seatbelt laws were enforced, etc..
