Rove’s legacy will be the subject of much debate, but this much would seem to be clear - Karl Rove was better at winning office than holding onto it. Be it the infamous, “Mission Accomplished” sign, the President’s disastrous handling of the Hurricane Katrina aftermath, the failed attempt at overhauling Social Security, the suicidal illegal immigration debate, or the tone-deaf communications effort that allowed the War in Iraq to be painted as a quagmire, and a booming economy to be seen as weak, Rove’s forte was clearly not in governance.

I think Rove was great. A positive. I’m very sorry he’s leaving, but why would he want to put up with the Commie MSM for another year?

He was a cynical pragmatist, a power player-
he had no fidelity to the Conservative Cause.
The likes of him had the RNC abandon Rep. Katherine Harris in her bid for Senate when she needed it most.

Positive, aside from the Comprehensive-Pandering-to-Hispanics-Unnecessarily debacle. His successor would be well advised to court the LEGAL, family-values majority of Hispanics.

Rove said that and continued to say it to strike fear into the hearts of Utopian Liberal Socialist Democrats. His strategy has been largely successful, invigorating the Demnocrap party to move to the extreme left, so far to the left that they become unelectable by mainstream America. He has done his job, and its too late for the Democrap party to turn its unleashed leftist monster around.
Again, Rove has the Dems by their proverbial cojones.
Witness over the last few days, the dems backpeddling like made about leaving Iraq. They finally got it, but much too late to silence Howard Dean and Michael Moore and the like.
The Dem convention in Denver will either be a blood bath, or a totally stiff, censored, and managed affair. Both will horrify, and alienate Americans.
Either way the Dems are royally f'd.

Rove’s plan for getting out the rural and suburban vote for GWB in 2004 won that election. Therefore, he is a worthy of all the kudos sent his way.

That was Tommy Franks, who was beyond the reach of Rove’s influence.
BTW the Mission WAS accomplished. Saddam WAS toppled, and is apparently still dead.
Addendum: the decision to support Arlen Sphincter instead of Pat Toomey was also a big-time negative.
An odd, uninformed article.
Rove’s time has passed. He brought targeted direct mail politics to the GOP. He showed that “conventional” wisdom about winning the White House was wrong, too.
You see, prior to Karl Rove, “everyone” in the political establishment held that you had to win at least one of the New York/California states in order to win the White House.
Rove said that “You can win the White House by winning the Heartland and nothing else.”
...And that put GWB into Office for 8 straight years.
Rove’s opposite, Bob Shrum, lost 8 Presidential campaigns for the Dems by believing otherwise.
But those accomplishments (while large and significant) are now in the mainstream political consciousness. Even Dems understand the Red State strategy as evidenced by their selection of Edwards as their 2004 VP nomination.
And direct mail political targeting is passe now in the Internet Age.
When the GOP finds its next “Rove,” it will be someone who is Internet-Savvy to such an extent that she recognizes a flaw with “conventional wisdom.”
Since he clearly played a large role in saving us from “President Gore” or “President Kerry”, how can he have been anything other than a positive for the GOP?
Having said that, I am not worthy to judge the great Karl Rove.
All of the Bush/Rove legacy can be summed up with this: Supreme Court 5-4 Conservative.
What about being the architect of the Republican debacle of November ‘06???

Rove won us the Presidency. Congress with their dismal approval ratings would take an act of God. It didn't help that the GOP gave the DIMS a target rich environment. I don't think Rove can be blamed for all that.
As soon as I saw this remark, I stopped reading the words of either a liar or an uninformed writer. The Mission that was Accomplished on the aircraft carrier Lincoln was its return from the longest deployment since WW2. The ship had finished its original deployment when the invasion began and they had to turn around and go back to the Gulf. They were finally coming home.
The misinformation of so many about this is another example of President Bush's unwillingness to stand up for himself against the lies of the DBM. They repeat a lie so many times that most people believe it. GWB's unwillingness has been my biggest disappointment in him and has led to many of the Republicans' political problems.
Rove accomplished his mission! I say well done!
