Global warming is forecast to set in with a vengeance after 2009, with at least half of the five following years expected to be hotter than 1998, the warmest year on record, scientists reported on Thursday.
Climate experts have long predicted a general warming trend over the 21st century spurred by the greenhouse effect, but this new study gets more specific about what is likely to happen in the decade that started in 2005.
To make this kind of prediction, researchers at Britain's Met Office -- which deals with meteorology -- made a computer model that takes into account such natural phenomena as the El Nino pattern in the Pacific Ocean and other fluctuations in ocean circulation and heat content.
A forecast of the next decade is particularly useful, because climate could be dominated over this period by these natural changes, rather than human-caused global warming, study author Douglas Smith said by telephone.
In research published in the journal Science, Smith and his colleagues predicted that the next three or four years would show little warming despite an overall forecast that saw warming over the decade.
"There is ... particular interest in the coming decade, which represents a key planning horizon for infrastructure upgrades, insurance, energy policy and business development," Smith and his co-authors noted.
The real heat will start after 2009, they said.

The old hockey stick projection. No change in the immediate future, but, boy, is it going to go up Real Soon Now.
(By the way, didn't NASA recant and now 1934 is the hottest year on record?

IOW, far enough out that everyone will have forgotten this proclamation by the time it comes due (and doesn’t happen).

Once this record cool summer is over, “global warming” will resume, eh?
(Record cool here in North Texas, anyway; it hasn’t yet hit 100 here this year)

If the following all were true, I’ll admit I’d be concerned:
1. the world really is going to heat up “dramatically” after 2009;
2. this is a man-made cause — or, at least, is more than minimally so, as opposed to being due to historically normal non-andropogenic actions (sun cycles, production of greenhouse gases by animals, plants, volcanoes); and
3. the warming will have a NET OVERALL negative effect on human quality of life.
I believe none of these things as of today. I’m open minded, but until someone convinces me of all 3, I cannot be simultaneously (1) emotionally honest and (2) worried.

Add a few hundred more variables and maybe their model will get interesting.

... So stop bothering us about the fact that nothing is happening between now and the 2008 US Presidential Elections. The Apocalypse is scheduled for right after the Inauguration.

Record cool summers are evidence of global warming — didn’t you get the memo?

which represents a key planning horizon
Very clever...tell US that global warming is gonna really kick in UNLESS we start taking care of it now, you know with a key planning horizon (tax, tax and tax!) and then when it doesn't happen they can say "see, better keep up with that planning horizon (tax) b/c it really worked"

Liberals always think that the world is static not dynamic. Cut taxes and you will get deficits... that is until the increase in spending in capital equipment makes things cheaper and jobs are created generating MORE revenue that was lost.
They view global temperatures in the same way, static not dynamic. An increase in global temperature as always progressing, unless its just another interglacial period that will be followed by the coming ice age.
