When conservatives learn to use their $’s as votes of affirmation or condemnation, liberal’s will shut their mouths or the doors on their left wing businesses.

Shut their mouths, close their doors----either is OK with me (snicker).

Politics and business should never mix in public.

Well sure! If your tax base depends on tourism...

But business owners make stupid mistakes all the time and never learn from them. Even non political mistakes.

For instance, if your business caters to the 20-30s crowd, why waste money advertising grandma and grandpa? When I see obviously targeted product being advertised in a shotgun fashion to reach EVERYONE -- it simply tells me the business owner has NO CLUE who his customers are...

Yep, the Dixie Chicks and NY Slimes business model scores again for our side.

They're slowly doing the same thing to Durango.

Yeah, I ski at Durango just about every year. Compared to what it was 20 years ago when I first started skiing there, it has changed dramatically. Thankfully, not so much as Breckenridge or Telluride, though. At least with Durango the ski crowds typically aren't as large as say, Breckenridge or Vail. Telluride ski crowds are sort of self-regulated by the challenging terrain.

Don't know what the skiing is like, but my family spent a week in a ski-in ski-out house, during the summer, in Mountain Village, MT a few years ago. I think they called the area 'Big Sky' The setting was lovely, and it would have been a great location for skiiers. You'd go out the front door, ski down the hill to the left, catch the lift at the bottom of the hill, ski up over the mountains, then ski back down the hill to the house when the day was done.

We stayed there because we knew the mountains would be pretty, and they were, and we wanted it as a base from which to do day trips to Yellowstone, go horseback riding, etc.

We found the house on Vacation Rentals by Owner . We've found several homes for family vacations through that site, and have never been disappointed!

"Durango has always had a liberal under current with a liberal arts college in the middle of it."

It wasn't always that bad, even with the college. Both my wife and I graduated from there in the mid 80's. At that time it was just really starting to turn. We still had some excellent professors who were conservative and actually taught the subject rather than try to indoctrinate students with their political leanings, but it was starting to change. One of the profs in the sociology field (big surprise) was also the head of the local communist party and proud of it. It did take a while to seep into the other departments on campus. They had an excellent school of business and due to the geographic location of the school, the geology department was (and still is) very highly rated in the nation.

I was in the music department (my wife in art) and I think we maybe started to see some of the changes earlier than other departments. Now, the college is so completely PC that I would never dream of sending one of my kids there. The whole community has followed down that path sadly. If you look at a county by county red/blue election map you will see that La Plata county has gone solidly blue in an area of surrounding red counties (like a mini-Denver).

Somehow, I can't quite picture Queen Oprah on skis...

Yeah, me neither. And, her house was located at nearly 12,000'. We used to drive right past it on the way to launch. Tough to breath up there and dang hard to get to. The running joke in the hang gliding community was that if you survived the truck ride up to Gold Hill, the flight down was nothing. That's how bad the road was in the summer. I found that to pretty much be true on most days. Winter access would mean access only by snomobile, snowcat or the ski lift.

I heard a couple of months ago from a long-time Telluride resident that she sold her house up on Gold Hill about a year ago, but they still don't let us fly there anymore......:(

I’m not sure how anyone can afford to ski at Durango anymore with what all the hotels charge for rooms now. Even though I grew up in the area I never was a downhill skier, although I used to cross-country ski. Friends of mine who did ski always liked to get over to Telluride if they could, because as you said, it was self-regulating as to who would be on the slopes. They could get away from the massive crowds of people coming to the area on ski package vacations and jamming up the lift lines and runs. Telluride demands a much higher level of ability to ski (unless you happen to like spending time in ambulance rides to the hospital).

It’s about time conservatives flexed their economic muscles.

Liberals can’t live without conservatives. We need to recognize that and pull the plug on anythng/everything liberal . . .cancel subscriptions, contact advertisers, boycott advertisers, etc . . .I quit watching the MSM years ago, including their trash primetime and canceled Dallas Morning News and USA Today. And after Target kicked out The Salvation Army, that was the end of my business there.

Enough is enough.

How far is too far, though?

For example, it ticked me off when Chevrolet chose a John Mellencamp song as their new advertising campaign (given Mellencamp’s strong anti-war stance and many vitriolic comments about the President). Now, in the back of my head, I am associating Chevrolet with agreeing with Mellencamp or at least condoning what he has said and done. As a result, I will not even consider a Chevrolet when the time comes to buy a new car or truck.

Is that too extreme?

Some of the older hotels are still reasonable if you go at the right time. We always check Texas High School websites to find out when their holidays are. We were in Durango several years ago and our last skiing day Texas came to town. Nothing against folks from Texas, but we went from sking right to the chair to 45 minute lift lines overnight. We try to schedule our trips when everybody else is busy, IOW, avoid holidays for crowd and cost control.

Ah, yes; the hordes of skiers from Texas. They do rather descend on the area all at once. We used to laugh at some of them who apparently felt it necessary to show everyone that, by gosh, they were skiers! They would wear not only their loudly colored ski outfits into the stores and restaurants, but (and I kid you not) some would even wear their ski boots into places. And I'm not talking about stores near the slopes, I mean over 20 miles away in town.

We did say, though, that they kept Durango "green" in the winter ($$$).

“That ain’t gonna happen. Money talks and when it walks away, liberals get nervous” Here is the mayors damage control spiel.

I am so very sorry for the inaccurate media coverage stating that the Telluride Town Council voted to impeach George Bush and Dick Cheney and that this is causing some of our visitors to cancel their plans to come to Telluride.

Please know that the issue before the council earlier this week was the result of a local journalist Thom Carnevale’s initiative effort. Our Town Charter states if any registered voter presents a petition (with at least 5% of the number of voters in the previous election) to the council on any issue, the council must put it on the ballot at the next regularly scheduled election. In lieu of placing this on the ballot, the Town Charter also gives the Town Council the option to adopt the petition by ordinance rather than refer it to the voters. This council felt that this was the wisest way to proceed and not to place it on the ballot in November. WE DID NOT VOTE TO IMPEACH ANYONE, WE RESPECTED A RESIDENT’S CONSTITUTIONAL AND TOWN CHARTER RIGHT OF INITIATIVE.

Once again, Telluride is a tolerant and welcoming destination resort that respects the rights of all people and does not want to discourage anyone from coming here. Yes, we are colorful and diverse but most of the time this attracts people, perhaps in this case it has worked against us and for this I am truly sorry.

Sincerely,

Mayor John Pryor

Once again, Telluride is a tolerant and welcoming destination resort ...

I'll be skiing there with my wife and some friends in early March. Over the years I've skied in CO, UT, CA, & ID. Although I've skied most of the ski resorts in CO this will be the first time for Telluride (I've visited Telluride 3 or 4 times in the past but only in summer). My impression of the people that live and work in Telluride ... the average age is probably 25, anyone 35, or older, is considered over the hill.

Thom Carnevale, the resident who collected 100 petition signatures and presented them to the board on the impeachment issue, said since the "right-wing" campaign began, support for his effort actually has grown.

No

Their town can lose all their business and become a ghost town.....all that matters is getting "even" with Bush.

They can't even figure out that it is too late to start any kind of impeachment proceedings that will affect Bush while he is in office.
