NEW YORK Beyond his alleged steroid use, Barry Bonds is unquestionably guilty of the use of something that confers extraordinarily unfair mechanical advantage: the armor that he wears on his right elbow. Amid the press frenzy over Bonds unnatural bulk, the true role of the object on his right arm has simply gone unnoticed.
This is unfortunate, because by my estimate, Bonds front arm armor has contributed no fewer than 75 to 100 home runs to his already steroid-questionable total.
Bonds tied Henry Aarons home run record of 755 on Saturday night and will go for the new standard this week back at home in San Francisco. As a student of baseball and currently a mechanics consultant to a major league baseball team -- I believe I have insight into the Bonds "achievement." I have studied his swing countless times on video and examined the mechanical gear closely through photographs.
For years, sportswriters remarked that his massive "protective" gear unequaled in all of baseball -- permits Bonds to lean over the plate without fear of being hit by a pitch. Thus situated, Bonds can handle the outside pitch (where most pitchers live) unusually well. This is unfair advantage enough but no longer controversial. However, it is only one of at least seven unfair advantages conferred by the apparatus.
The other six:
1) The apparatus is hinged at the elbow. It is a literal "hitting machine" that allows Bonds to release his front arm on the same plane during every swing. It largely accounts for the seemingly magical consistency of every Bonds stroke.

Ever since they let this drug addict play ball because of his “record-breaking” streak, I’ve turned off all pro baseball. Bonds is a skunk, and the baseball commissioner is a bigger skunk for sending a message to America’s children that being a druggie is okay with him.
Baseball with its pro-drug attitude, ancient habits (coaches dressed like little boys, unlimited foul balls, 7 or 8 warm-up pitches when a guy comes in from the bullpen [where he already warmed up]) is only one step above the excitement of a 1-0 score in a 90-minute soccer game. Barf! (and Snore!)
I agree, and it will be Barry*
And since when does a person have to be a nice guy? There's a LOT of ball players out there who are a-holes on and off the field.
Great Response!! ;>)
It’s just a part of life. Aren’t we allowed to have any diversions in our miserable existence? Can’t you allow us to be pacified for a few minutes? Must it be all politics 24/7? Remember that old adage, All work and no play makes Mysterio a dull boy.
Maybe someone You Tubed it ?
Maybe, I’ll check at the HBO website for it first.
Great picture of you. Who’s the guy in the lower photograph?

>>And I can still name the starting eight for each year of the Big Red Machine of the 70s.
You guys were awesome! The Big Red Machine was one of the great all time teams. I grew up in Pittsburgh in the 60’s/70’s and was a huge Pirate fan. I had lots of cousins in Cincy and we always had a baseball feud going on. :) Mom used to stick me on a Greyhound to Cincy to spend a couple of weeks each summer there. It meant that Mom had one less kid in her hair for a week or two, and my Cincy cousins had someone to badger about baseball. :)
My all time favorite was Willie Stargell and 2nd was Roberto Clemente. Many’s the time I sat in the left field bleachers at Forbes Field to watch them play the Reds. And even more in Three Rivers Stadium.
I do miss those days...

“Babe Ruth at the peak of his career would today be a hopeless fatass who couldn’t even make the cut for concession stand operator for the Bowie Baysox AA minor league team.”
Now that was funny! Of course, Ruth was a human being, Bonds—who knows? Anyway, Basebore blows. I quit following the game (business) when they went on strike in the 70s. They could shove a ball up their arses and fart a home run for all I care. I still wouldn’t watch it or care one way or the other.
Link/research help needed. Does anyone know were I can find a good summary of the incident where Bonds decided he should get more of the baseball card royalties than the rookies because he sold more cards than they did? I think he threatened to not allow his image on baseball cards one year.

Around 1975 or 1976 I went to the old Riverfront ballpark for a doubleheader with the Pirates, aka the Lumber Company. Got down there a couple of hours early to watch batting practice, which was always great when those two teams were playing each other.
We watched Stargell hit TWO balls into the red seats of Riverfront - right field naturally, and caught two from....oh lord, (gettin old is hell)....that big outfielder...what was his name? Had a bit of trouble with coke during the end of his career....(sorry I can’t remember his name).
Both of those teams were fun to watch.

I did hear Bonds comment, and Costas’s response on Scarborough’s morning show last week.
The big question is, how can this be tied to the Iraq war?
Some local bozette said that the bridge in Minneapolis wouldn’t have fallen if we weren’t spending money in Iraq.
And Barry Bonds is responsible for higher attendance numbers in all the stadiums he plays in during his pursuit of this record. A lot of his detractors do some pretty hearty cheering when he hits a homer in their park. I see Bonds hating much as I do Bush hating.....an irrational obsession with many who just want to believe all the bad press they read. Hey, whatever gets them through the day.....;>)
Lots of envious middle-aged men and former jocks out there.
I like to refer to them as the has beens and never weres....;>)
