Mitt Takes the Gloves Off

Yesterday, Mitt Romney went into Iowa radio host Jan Mickelson’s studio for a conversation about politics. At least it should have been about politics. Instead, Mickelson decided he wanted to grill Romney on the Mormon church and Mormon theology. (I also thought Mickelson’s comments on politics, namely that the President should overrule the Supreme Court when in the President’s opinion the Court oversteps its bounds, were a tad on the screwy side as well.)

Mickelson’s station, WHO, had a video recorder on the governor that was recording his off-air comments, something that Romney was unaware of. On the air, Mickelson stated that according to Mormon theology, Romney should have been excommunicated from the Mormon Church because he was once pro-choice. Off the air, Romney tried to gently tell Mickelson that he didn’t know what he was talking about. Although I’ve never heard even a snippet of Mickelson’s show before today, I bet Mickelson holding forth on something he knows nothing about happens on a not infrequent basis. The off air exchange (that once again Romney didn’t know was being taped) was at times heated. WHO today posted the footage on its website.

Mitt is going nowhere. All anyone knows about him is that he’s a Mormon, and it’s all anyone talks about. No one knows or cares about his issues, other than his flip-flopping; all he ever gets ANY attention for is his being a Mormon.

You're ignorant. Jan Mickelson is the top conservative radio host in Iowa for a very good reason. He's knowledgable, brilliant and principled.

Right, I forgot he JUST became a “lifetime member”...and I’m sure Mitt wants it that way.

Read the post carefully it was posted on the Hugh Hewitt blog by Dean Barnett. As to being principled, why did he record him off camera and stated "they were off the record?" then release the video?

I was not passing an opinion on Mitt or the announcer. But you cannot ignore the fact that Mitt conducted himself with dignity and poise throughout the interview. As to whether he is a flip flopper or not. You will make that decision at the ballot box.

You should have posted more clearly. It read like your opinion.

A) Jan Mickelson is highly respected, for good reasons, among Iowa conservative voters. Getting sideways with him is about as stupid as it gets.

B) Dignity and poise? More like “slick.” Nothing new there.

C) “Flip flopper” is way too kind. He’s a lifelong liberal who is now lying through his teeth to try and win conservative votes.

Mitt Romney is the biggest deceiver in American politics today, and he deserves anything he gets from stalwart conservatives like Jan Mickelson.

Barnett and Hewitt are nothing more than squishy Romney hacks.

I’ll trust Jan Mickelson, thanks.

LOL...the idea that this interview was in any way “off the record” is too laughable for words.

Dude, they’re sitting in a TV studio. WHO is radio AND TV.

Unfortunately that’s how the people in this country see/think of him. People just cannot seem to get past the fact that he is part of a religion that is considered ‘outside the norm’ in American politics.

This would be news; but he has taken the gloves off about a couple hundred times.

Jan Mickelson, (with the help of the late Cleon Skousen) nailed Romney to the wall.

I have to say, as a Massachusetts resident, I am proud that this was barely an issue around here. The reaction of the nation media and folks here, for one example, to his religion took me by surprise. I simply don't care WHAT religion he practices--I want to know how he THINKS. While I think he's a decent guy, I just don't support him for president--Hillarycare here in Mass. is all the demonstration of his "conservatism" I need, thanks.

Sorry about that. I should have identified the opinion on the blogger as his own.

I do not know who Jan Mickelson is. I would take it that he is highly respected member of the Iowan Conservative movement. However Mitt Romney did not know he was being videotaped thus his demeanour was natural and un-rehearsed.

Labelling him as "slick" to me is too close to brandishing his in the Clinton mode.

The flip flopper characterization may be his undoing. What works in Mass may not work for the rest of America.

As to being the biggest deciver, well isn't that a little thick? Hitlery or her Hubby are in a league of their own!

cheers!

I’m not exactly what you would call a staunch Romney supporter — quite the opposite, in fact — but I must say, I’m impressed. I’m also somewhat astonished that people would stick up for the host despite his blatant and unabashed dishonesty.

I think Mitt’s impressive. I know next to nothing about the Mormon Church. Somebody, please tell me why it makes any more difference that he’s a Mormon than a Presbyterian or an Episcopalian or whatever. I hate to be naive, but I don’t understand.
