Pastor Kicks Transvestite Out of Uncle's Funeral
wafb.com ^ | 07/31/97 | Caroline Moses

A Denham Springs man showed up at his uncle's funeral only to be kicked out by the pastor of the church. The reason? The man was wearing a dress. The pastor says he did the right thing. The transvestite insists he's heartbroken. WAFB's Caroline Moses reports on Dermaine and his dress.

Dermaine Johnson says he feels more like a woman than a man, and has for a while. He is attracted to men, and on most any day, he looks more like a woman. Johnson says, "This is who I am. I can't change that, that's me. Take me or leave me."

Dermaine put on a black dress and headed to his uncle's funeral earlier this month, only to be told he would have to leave. He says, "There wasn't no doubt they were judging me." Dermaine says both the pastor of New Zion Baptist Church in Denham Springs, and the pastor's wife, kicked him out of the church. He says, "He's like, 'Cause of the way you dress.' I was like, 'Hmmm, the way I'm dressed.'"

A woman says, "I was mad 'cause that's my best friend. I was mad." The woman did not want to give her name, but she says it was her father, Randolf Johnson's funeral, and he would have wanted his entire family to be there. She says, "I felt hurt, you know, it wasn't right and humiliating to us 'cause we are so big and people be trying to hate on us."

Johnson says he was close to his Uncle Randolf, too close not to go to his funeral. He says, "There is no way in heaven that God would want somebody to do this to somebody, just hurtful. I didn't like it at all."

Before Reverend Leroy Alvin Taylor of New Zion drove away from our cameras, he told us he did ask Dermaine to leave because he was wearing a dress. The reverend said, "You got to do what you got to do." Johnson says, "It made me feel like I was an infant baby, just left alone in the world with nobody to care for me." He says, "I came back home and I felt so bad, I just cried probably for like two hours."

He adds, "I wanted to be strong, so for my family, so I didn't hold my head down. I held it up." "I say, 'Come as you are, not to be judged when you get to the door,'" says Johnson.

How did anyone know that he was actually a he? I mean, it isn't like he looks like James Brown/Liberace.

(sarcasm for all of you in Rio Linda)

Huh? IT had nothing to do with size, dear. It had to do with him wearing a dress. Good thing it had nothing to do with grammer as well.

The transvestite showed no respect for his uncle, none for the family or other funeral attendees, and no respect for the minister who was performing the funeral. He should have never dressed like that and he knows it.

I recall an incident when I was a teenager, when my pastor walked back to the back of the church and leaned over and whispered something to a “lady”, and “she” stood and departed. It turned out that it was a transvestite. The pastor did the right thing.

Still, that dress he’s holding up looks more like a bathing suit! He could at least have worn a tasteful skirt and jacket, perhaps with a feathered hat.

Oh no, my dear! No. This was a funeral. A feathered hat at a funeral is so passè. It should have been one of those chic Jackie Kennedy pill-box hats with a short, snappy veil....plus pearls, gloves, and maybe even those new black-and-white designer fake ghetto talons, for just that little bit of panache

“Careful there, Bill O’Reilly might use your post as a source for “hate”.”

Hee Hee, let’s see if I get on the factor? HILLARY CLINTON HAS MALE GENITALIA LARGER THAN OBAMA BIN LIBERAL’S

Now could someone watch for me?

I think the pastor did the transvestite a favor by pointing out that he was in sin, rather than compromise Biblical principles and coddle him.

At the church I went to growing up, a womam would just as soon go naked as wear pants. There was a time when women wouldn't wear pants anywhere. Now pantsuits, jeans, shorts etc., are considered female clothing, so it is not wrong. Kilts have always been a defined male attire so it is not wrong. If designers were to create a dress or skirt designed for men, it would be appropriate.

What is wrong is to dress in a fashion that is only appropriate for the opposite sex. This is getting harder and harder to do now, since no one dresses up anymore and jeans/shorts and t shirts are commonly worn by both sexes.

“The pastor’s purpose was to provide comfort to them, not to judge and decide who can and who cannot attend. I expect that kind of bigotry from the left, not from conservatives.”

That is not bigotry in any sense. Nor is the pastor’s sole purpose in the ceremony of death to provide comfort only. He is also there to intercede for the soul of the deceased.

He is ALSO the guardian of the church itself and all it stands for.

The dressup doll got called on his bs and tightfully so.

Like Jesus said, only the sick need a doctor. He shouldn’t have been thrown out.

Tolerance of the intolerable is not a virtue. Jesus spoke with prostitutes, he did not condone prostitution inside the synagogue.

Drawing a line on what is acceptable is also a form of treatment. One that has been all but forgotten.

"This pastor and his wife, may have lost any chance to witness salvation to this man/woman."

==============================

The Pastor and his wife did prevent any chance for nearby children to witness sin though.

"Hell of a place to make a statement.I would have thrown the bum out.But then I’m a hard ass.Flame away."

There was a time when men were men. Pre-pussification.
You can tell by the replies here that MOST American males have been pussified.
Anyway, in that world, not so long ago, that pervert wouldn't have dared to show up in drag.
The real men would have beaten him within an inch of his life, and then the cops would have had their turn.

Which commandment addresses this issue? Are Kilts excempted? Are women in pants going to hell?

No one in a kilt or pants was kicked out.

The inability to make decisions because someone somewhere can muddy the waters has all but ruined our society.

This is obviously a black church. I can assure you that kind of nonsense would never be tolerated in most black churches (excluding Barak Hussein Obama’s church). If this man wanted to attend his uncle’s funeral, he should not have sought to disrupt it and draw attention to himself by showing up dressed as the opposite sex.

I feel sorry for the family, but they chose to have the service in the church. If they realized “he, she, or it” would be showing up dressed inappropriately, they could have arranged for the service to be held at the funeral home or elsewhere. Since it was held inside the church, the pastor had every right ensure that this type of sin would not be tolerated or condoned within its walls.

As has already been stated, the church may be for sinners, but it is not for sinning.

I would strongly disagree. Funerals are for the family and friends of the deceased. The pastor's purpose was to provide comfort to them, not to judge and decide who can and who cannot attend. I expect that kind of bigotry from the left, not from conservatives.

They chose to have the funeral in a House of God. With that comes the rules of God. I suppose you find God to be a bigot as well?

“Where do you draw the line, perhaps have an orgy in the church would be OK? The man should not be condemn, but the church should not be an enabler either.”

Hmm, where do you draw the line? How about the overeweight guy going back for his third plate of food at the church picnic? How about the fellow coveting another church member’s new Mercedes? How about the guy you catch eying the shapely woman in the next aisle?

I agree this guy was completely inapproriate, but he was AT A FUNERAl. He wasn’t trying to become a member of the church.
