Portugal came into existence as a County in Western Castille during the early Reconquista. During that period the Christian Kingdoms of Castille, Leon, Portugal, Aragon, Valencia, etc. and Moorish states including Cartagena, Seville, Saragossa continually made shifting alliances against each other.
Portugal completed its part of the Reconquista in the late 14th Century, and the Christian Kings of Castille and Leon, Ferdinand and Isabella, completed the Reconquista with the conquest of Seville in 1492 (A very good year in Spain). After that time the finally united Spain also came to rule Portugal for a substantial period, but did not integrate it into the Spanish political system.
My city has been inhabited by the:
French, Spanish, British, Confederate and US
It was a lot of things over time but because it was once a mosque in the middle of all that, it is still referred to as "the mosque". Nice.
That just means that there's a Jewish or Christian site underneath it.
I love those types of stories, too. :-) That’s amazing the horns held up for 900 years. :-0

Gods, Graves, Glyphs (alpha order)
They just want to purge the kufir from "muslim lands". If only "muslim lands" were only occupied by muslims there would be "no terrorism".
This Islamic supremacist mindset must be squashed. Religious freedom must come to Saudi Arabia. It isn't about race or nationality, the Islamic supremacists hate the "domestic" muslims who've dared to convert away from the faith too. They want them dead or at least out of "muslim" lands.
Too few people ask the activists "what lands are muslim lands". Saudi Arabia? Iraq? Kuwait? Palestine? Israel? Lebanon? Turkey? Spain? Indonesia? Michigan?
If that is true, we should get a bunch of crazies to set up sharia in Beijing airport (until they are arrested and shot). That would then keep the muzzies busy for a few hundred years...
Amazingly, even in the wide angle lens that fellow’s head is quite narrow. Not much room for actual thinking.
Yep, same goes for Pensacola.
OK that’s 5 flags. Which is missing from the pharse when we used to refer to “Six Flags over Texas”? (Now that pharase has become just an amusement park name, but it is a real part of Texas History.)
I guess the missing flag is the Mexican Flag. Apparently the Mexicans never ruled Mobile, AL, but they did rule Texas briefly.
Has anyone ever traced the origin of the Sicilian Mafia to the Muslim occupation? The Mafia seems to use Muslim-like terror techniques.
Nope, no Mexicans. I don't think they ever got past the Sabine river seperating Texas and Louisiana.
No. But, your idea crossed my mind too.
“Arabs ruled the island for roughly 200 years ... In an archaeological sense, the Arab or Islamic phase in Sicily is ephemeralits duration was short”
The Mongols ruled Russia for roughly 200 years too.
The found something that was lost in a 1968 earthquake?
Imagine the odds. :-)
Here’s the quick and dirty on the Sicilian Mafia from Wiki:

The first sentence suggests a possible Medieval origin. I found it interesting that the USA used Mafia sources for intel during the invasion of Sicily in WWII.
Yup. My point is that 200 years is only empemeral or short when we look into the distant past.
Nobody thinks of the US as having only been around a little while.
I’m sure it seemed like a really long time to the Sicilians and Russians!
Dig a bit and see if you find skulls 10 feet away from the rest of the skeletons. Maybe you’ll find the ruins of a school with children in it who were tortured and killed by the death cult. Surely there must be some sign of this cult which has left its painful mark on the world.
Sicily ping!
