True, but in case of the Mongols, I think their destructive impact on Eastern Europe went well beyond their 200 year rule.

The Mongols were only the last, depending on how you classify the Ottomans, and most successful of the great steppe nomad invasions of richer lands. There had been many before, although few made it all the way to Central Europe. One major exception being the Magyars.

The Crimean Tatars conducted massive slave raids into Russia, Poland and Ukraine as late as the mid-1700s.

Yes, because Mussolini was, until that time, the ONLY person to be successful in nearly destroying the Mafia. He basically put to death anyone who was even suspected of being associated with organized crime. This is why the mafia was so eager to help FDR and the Brits, and why we tolerated the fact that they controlled the Christian Democrats in Southern Italy following the war.

Oh, I thought you were going to name a city in Sicily, since you had mentioned Sicily.

The Sicilian flag is the weirdest I've ever seen. Really bizarre.

I'm still reading up on Sicily. Its multicultural history is fascinating. Here's what I found in Wikipedia re the Mafia:

The word "mafia" is taken from the old Sicilian adjective mafiusu, which has its roots in the Arabic mahyas, meaning "aggressive boasting, bragging" or marfud meaning "rejected". Roughly translated, it means "swagger", but can also be translated as "boldness, bravado". In reference to a man, mafiusu in 19th-century Sicily was ambiguous, signifying a bully, arrogant but also fearless, enterprising, and proud...

I don't know how much we're allowed to copy, but you can read more here.

Eastern Europe seems to have taken it’s share of beatings over the centuries.
