A TV news producer may have been killed by a hit-and-run driver outside his Greenwich Village apartment Monday morning, police said.

Eric Wishnie, 44, was crossing at Sixth Avenue and 10th Street when he was allegedly struck at 3:05 a.m., according to authorities.

Wishnie was a producer for NBC News. He died at St. Vincent's Hospital, police said.

Wishnie was on leave from the network. He is the husband of NBC reporter Dawn Fratangelo.

NBC News President Steve Capus issued the following statement:

Eric Wishnie was an enormously talented former senior producer at NBC News, who had a hand in some of the most monumental and memorable news stories of our time. The entire NBC News family is devastated by this loss, and extends our deepest sympathies to his family.

NEW YORK — A former NBC News producer has died after being found badly injured in a Greenwich Village street.

Eric Wishnie was found lying in the street at 10th St. and 6th Ave. at 2:51 a.m. Monday, police said. Wishnie was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital, where he died at 5:02 a.m.

A police source told WNBC.com’s Tim Minton that detectives now believe Wishnie fell or jumped from the roof of his apartment building, 50 feet above street level.

According to a source with knowledge of the investigation, the victim sustained multiple trauma injuries consistent with an accidental fall or jump from that height.

Police called off an initial search for a driver who may have caused the injuries in a hit-and-run collision, according to a source. Police do not believe foul play was involved.

Did the guy who found him run over him then? Just a dumb thought.

Actually there are two different times in the news reports first is 3:05 and then 2:51 ... I was just commenting on the missing 14 min. between when he was found (2:51) and when he was hit (3:05)!

At that time of night, numerous adult beverages might have been a factor in his death.

Per post 42 it now appears he either jumped or fell from the 50-foot high roof of his apartment building.

...and now the reason he was on leave becomes relevant, yes?

You would think that the splat of blood on the sidewalk from a three foot tall crushed man,
would possibly have ruled out a hit and run driver

No?

I’m totally miffed that the hit and run was deemed alleged; yet the fall from the building is deemed accidental. They can rule out that he could have been pushed/thrown yet speculate that a car may have killed him in journalistic reporting??

Unless the cameras at google street view aren’t currently showing live shoots, I didn’t see any yellow investigation tape around the area.

You can see his apartment building. I guess the street level investigation could be done by now also.

I just wonder if they'll have an interview like they do with the families of the troops killed...."How do you FEEL?" or " How did you feel when you were told that your husband was dead?".... "Are the traffic policies of the city of New York responsible for your husband's death?.

Well that makes at least one dead NBC producer since President Bush declared an end to hostilities in Iraq.

What was he doing out and about at 3:05 am?
________

3am in NYC is like 1145pm anywhere else. It really is the city that doesn’t sleep.

That’s why I tell my kids to be home by midnight, nothing good happens after midnight. Mostly weirdos, drunks, and people up to ‘no good’ are out.

LOL. I’m sure that sounded a lot more insightful when you wrote it. But when you break the entire world into only 2 categories (legal/illegal), your comment is true by definition.
