Pope Benedict XVI said the debate raging in some countries particularly the United States and his native Germany between creationism and evolution was an absurdity, saying that evolution can coexist with faith.
The pontiff, speaking as he was concluding his holiday in northern Italy, also said that while there is much scientific proof to support evolution, the theory could not exclude a role by God.
They are presented as alternatives that exclude each other, the pope said. This clash is an absurdity because on one hand there is much scientific proof in favor of evolution, which appears as a reality that we must see and which enriches our understanding of life and being as such.
He said evolution did not answer all the questions: Above all it does not answer the great philosophical question, Where does everything come from?
Benedict also said the human race must listen to the voice of the Earth or risk destroying its very existence.

I listened - it told me to build a 3,000 sq ft house...
Mother earth worship is a cornerstone of modern paganism.
See why I’m not a Catholic? He just denied Scripture.
Faith can coexist with evolution but there are some who have a problem with some believing that God created life.
If God did not create, does God exist? Did God evolve too? Did God (or gods) spring forth like black holes from the Big Bang, is God just another byproduct?
The answer does not need to be taught in public schools but there are some in the culture war who ridicule those who have a faith in a higher power.
You need to read what he actually said before launching into some indignant, anti-Catholic huff. The Pope said that if evolution exists it is a creation of God. Makes sense to me. He further said that if you contaminate and pollute your environment donât expect God to clean up after you..... advice I received from my Mom and kindergarten teacher.
The Catholic Church has long accepted evolution. I didn’t even know there was a creationism/evolution debate until several years ago. (And, no, I don’t want to be involved in it.) :-)
As for the “Voice of the Earth”, well, I don’t know. Maybe he was just trying to be poetic...
Save your breath - its wasted energy. You will never convince them. They think the Bible is a science text, just like the Evolutionary radicals think Darwin is a religious prophet.
The part about “listening to the voice of mother earth” is kind of creepy though. I like to listen to the voice of my guns personally. They speak with authority,
Care to be more specific? I read his actual words, not the MSNBC condensed version, and I didn't see any contradiction.
More like re-interpreting it.
Either the whole Bible is to be taken literally or none of it is.
The fact that God created creatures that can adapt and evolve in this world are not mutually exclusive.
This issue comes when you say you cannot have one without the other.
The Pope only needs to read the scriptures for an explanation of all life that existed prior to the fall of lucifer, “dinosaurs, etc.” Explained here:

He has the same concept of genesis vs. evolution that John Paul II had. He doesn’t want to give people who understand science a reason to reject faith. Smart guy.

Oh, THAT’S never gonna happen!!!!
(getting my popcorn and a new cup of coffee waiting for the usual suspects to arrive)
“Criticizing the Pope because he said my church wasn’t “real” ..”
Nothing new there. It goes back to the Reformation.
And while Catholics and Protestants were killing each other in Europe, the Muslims were trying to steal the entire continent. I guess things haven’t changed much.
I can hear them laughing now in Riyadh and Mecca.
Allow the man some poetic license.
