Libs Want Another, Bigger Increase to the Minimum Wage

he day the first minimum wage increase in 10 years was enacted, Democrats and Big Labor made it clear they would ask for another hike soon.

On Tuesday, a 70 cent increase to the federal minimum wage went into effect. The minimum wage increase, passed by the Democrat-controlled Congress in May, will increase 70 cents twice more over the next two years, until it reaches $7.25 in 2009.

To celebrate, labor activists held a rally on Capitol Hill to thank congressional Democrats for delivering the pay raise—and demanded more.

“Even when we get to $7.25, it’s not enough. We have to work hard for more!” labor leader Anna Burger of the Service Employees International Union yelled. Burger’s calls were echoed by Sen. Hillary Clinton (D.-N.Y.) Monday evening at the Democrats third televised presidential debate. “By the time we got it raised after 10 years, it was already out of date,” she said.

After Burger’s impassioned speech, speakers played U2’s’ “Beautiful Day” as congressional Democrats walked onstage. There, Democratic and labor leaders exchanged many hugs.

Sen. Ted Kennedy (D.-Mass.) said he was willing to raise the minimum wage much higher. He, along with Rep. George Miller (D.-Calif.), said, “We’re going to introduce a bill to raise it to $9.70 an hour.”

Chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Charlie Rangel (D.-N.Y.) said increasing the federal minimum wage would give dignity to low-wage workers, as well as help defend the country. “This will protect national security because a nation can’t survive without its dignity.”

“Remember this is just the minimum,” Rangel said. “You ain’t seen nothing yet!” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D.-M.D.) praised the Democratic House for passing an increase to the minimum wage within the first 100 days of control. “Unfortunately, it took just a little longer to get it through the Republicans in the Senate and to have the President sign the bill,” Hoyer said. “And, frankly,” Hoyer explained, “he only signed the bill only because there was other stuff in there that he wanted in that particular bill.”

The other “stuff” wanted by President Bush in the bill Democrats put the wage increase into was supplemental funding for the war in Iraq. The wage raise was tied to $120 billion Iraq war bill passed by Congress in May. That bill also included $4.8 billion tax breaks for small business, designed to encourage reluctant Republicans to support the wage hike.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D.-Nev.) gave a partisan speech at the event. “The Republicans hate this victory today,” he said. “Do you realize how much they hate what we’ve done today? They resent what happened last November, they are jealous of what happened last November and they are mad as hell about what happened last November. They don’t want to acknowledge what we’ve been able to accomplish.”

Reid listed three accomplishments achieved by the Democratic Congress: the wage increase, $7 billion included in homeland security funding for Hurricane Katrina reconstruction and hearings held on Iraq.

“We’ve had 100 and we’re going to have 100 more and we are proud of it, in preparation to have our valiant troops to come home,’ Reid said.

At the event, a small group of well-dressed, young men and women protested the Capitol Hill labor rally. They held sarcastic signs that said “Democrats, thanks for raising my taxes!” and “Democratic Accomplishments? 0.” Soon after they assembled, Capitol Police asked them to leave because they did not have a permit to protest the event.

This reporter also saw Capitol Police escort two members of the anti-war protest group Code Pink off Capitol grounds.

Except that the minimum wage doesn’t create any new capital. If companies are forced to pay more salary they will compensate elsewhere, like layoffs or price increases.

Anything that would return less than $5.15 an hour to an employer is not now being employed anywhere in this country because of the minimum wage. The opportunity cost to the economy can’t be calculated.

If they really wanted higher wages for American labor, they would push for tariffs on countries without labor protections and enforce immigration laws to restrict supply.

In reality, they seem to just want to put private industry out of business and force the U.S. to import goods or depend on the government for goods and services.

The SEIU in Kalifornia is full of illegal intruder undocumented “workers”.
This union gets the majority of it’s membership dues from them. The union is working hard to keep the illegals coming in across the border.

Translation: Libs Want Another, Bigger payoff to the worthless unions.

Want to see a liberal scream. Introduce a clean minimum wage bill on the floor of either house, i.e. “Be it enacted that the minimum wage in the United States shall be X”.

This, instead of the usual “amendment to the Fair wages and standards act of 1938” with all it’s union contract tripwires.

Remember, that the minimum wage was originally enacted so that nobody could undercut the union wage, which is pulled out of thin air instead of being based on the cost of production.

My uncle who is a doctor once said “money for education is out there if you look for it hard enough”. In this economy, just about anyone can afford a decent education (through student loans and such) which will get them needed skills in this global economy we live in.

When are we going to have all legislatures- Federal and State levels put bills forth that are ONE topic only?

I am tired of all the piggybacking on everything.....

Having said that- I wonder how many jobs are going to be carved out of the economy when small businesses let part of their staff go over the increase in payroll costs????

I have always thought that the minimum wage should be $1/hr to link currency to labor. This wouldn’t work for economists who believe that we need to have a steady rate of inflation to encourage investment, but I believe the prominence of the stock market and retirement investment practices has already established economic habits that won’t be affected by a 2-4% inflation rate disappearing.

Can you say hyperinflation?

My German mother tells a joke about the economic situation before Hitler.
When theives encountered a wheelbarrow full of cash, they took the wheelbarrow.

They factory operators also let the workers off early on payday, before the value dropped!!

BTW, in 2009 the minimum wage with EIC will be $9.40/hr for a family of three.

That could be a negative number, depending on how you define labor and wages. Students and interns sometimes pay money to have the possibility of much more later on.

Knowing what we
now know, shouldn't we
insist that those who
cannot afford the
kind of life we
enjoy, have a wage
raise, long before our
selves?

McDonalds starts people at $8.50-$9 where I live (N. Cal, depends on the neighborhood). It's posted on the sign to get spoiled suburban kids with $50+/week allowances interested in working at all. They also provide transportation from the bad parts of town just to stay staffed. I understand they are over $10 once they establish they can show up on time and sober. Granted it's lousy work, but no worse then it was decades ago when I did similar for much less.

I'm not spending too much effort looking at that end of the job market.

But that doesn't explain how a little mom and pop shop doing local business only could be forced to comply with a federal minimum wage.

If mom and pop only use and sell products produced within state boundaries, they could make a good argument that no interstate commerce was involved. If they purchase something across a state line, the feds will claim that is interstate commerce. That's the hook they employ to justify gun control laws. The manufactured product crosses state lines enroute to the retailer.

Cranking up minimum wage just means more unemployment for legal citizens and more cash under the table to illegal aliens to cover the labor needs.

How’s this?

http://www.usbig.net/whatisbig.html

The Basic Income Guarantee (BIG) is a government ensured guarantee that no one’s income will fall below the level necessary to meet their most basic needs for any reason. As Bertrand Russell put it in 1918, “A certain small income, sufficient for necessities, should be secured for all, whether they work or not, and that a larger income should be given to those who are willing to engage in some work which the community recognizes as useful. On this basis we may build further.” Thus, with BIG no one is destitute but everyone has the positive incentive to work. BIG is an efficient, effective, and equitable solution to poverty that promotes individual freedom and leaves the beneficial aspects of a market economy in place.

The term BIG is more specific than terms like income maintenance or income support, which refer to any kind of program designed to aid those with lower incomes. The Basic Income Guarantee differs from existing income maintenance programs in the United States and Canada in that it is both universal and has no work requirement. It is therefore, very simple and easy to administer. It helps the working poor, single parents, and the homeless, without placing anyone under the supervision of a caseworker.

On the bright side, however, the only way the minimum wage hike is bad is if people are going to take the extra money and bury it somewhere. Otherwise, it will be spending capital that circulates back into the economy.

Where does that "extra money" come from? Employers will have two options - (A) raise rates or (B) hire fewer workers. Option (A) means you pay more for goods and services. Option (B) means that there are fewer opportunities for low-skill workers to learn critical job skills.

There's also option (C) - hire under the table.

“By the time we got it raised after 10 years, it was already out of date," declared Hillary.

By that logic, by the time Dems get around to passing another minimum wage bill,
it too will be out of date, so why bother? They should quit while they are ahead.
Besides, the last one raised minimum wages only in the fly-over red states.

No one will ever accuse Dems of being effective can-do legislators,
though they control Congress. They're in a perpetual slumber party.

.
