GMA Home Protection Tips: Chimes, Mini-Cactus, But No Guns
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

No guns please, we're liberals . . .

As soon as today's "Good Morning America" began to tease an upcoming how-to segment on protecting against home invasion, I immediately suspected the show wouldn't discuss one obvious measure: obtaining fireams and learning how to use them.

And sure enough . . .

GMA ran the segment in the wake of the horrific home-invasion in Connecticut in which the the wife and two daughters of a prominent doctor were killed and the man badly beaten. An expert was brought in to discuss various measures, and Chris Cuomo added some suggestions of his own. They ranged from keeping shrubbery low, to installing lights, alarms and air chimes, to putting peepholes in the door, to creating a "safe room" to which a family can flee.

But never did GMA breathe a word about firearms. My favorite moment was Cuomo's Cactus Defense. That's Chris' hand pointing at that lethal little mini-cactus in the window planter.

GOOD MORNING AMERICA CO-HOST CHRIS CUOMO: Something as simple as cactus. Sounds simple, right? Oh, they wouldn't care about that, right? But they do. They think about these things. Chimes, outside the window.

View video here.

I don't know, Chris. If your home were being invaded, what would you rather have handy: a spider cactus or a Smith & Wesson?

Mossberg 500 used to be my friend. But now I have new German friends named Hechler and Koch, and know a few austrians named Glock. To show how much I like Europeans, I also have an Italian friend named Beretta.

They are all really nice guys, unless you attack their owner.

"If these people think that wind chimes and cactuses will protect good people from brutal, determined murderers, they are too nutty to be passing out advice. Unfortunately, millions of people--including themselves--lack the wit to comprehend this."

Well said. How can these people truly be so naive or stupid or both?

I was watching TV one night, heard a noise at my front door, looked thru the peephole to see some scumbag trying to pick my deadbolt. Got my shotgun, whipped the door open, aimed the shotgun at the guy and then laughed as the man’s eyes widened and he ran like a rabbit down the steps! Until police resopnse in my city is that quick, I’ll keep my weapons, thank you very much!

Just imagine the terror in that thug's eyes if you had whipped the door open and shook your windchimes at him!

Or if I'd shown him my cactus plant!

But what if you hit him with your prickly pear cactus?

That would have been bad!

I bet they didn’t even mention a DOG!.............

A dog would increase a home's carbon footprint so of course a dog is out of the question.

But it just might be possible to offset that carbon signature by growing a few plants, like cactus, right? So maybe the dog would be acceptable.

I’m betting he has a doorman.

“Good point. A dog is probably better than a gun. Better they note your dog and go elsewhere than you have to blow them away after they get in the house.”...Why not both?"

Don't be greedy.

Offer the robbers a glass of wine and a cracker.

And please don't forget the Brie.

The liberals are even taking away the options of having pit bulls and rotweillers as a means of property defense.

My bedroom directly faces my front door, which is equipped with one of those high-pitched sound devices if it's opened. (The whole house is wired as such.) That sound could wake the dead.

My .357 revolver is two feet away, and just beyond it is my Remington 870 short-barreled (but legal) shotgun loaded with 00 shells. I've got a clear view and have practiced what I'd do.

Alas, it's too cold where I live to have cacti, so I'm not completely safe.

“Good point. A dog is probably better than a gun.”

I had that debate in my head and now have several of both. ;)

Nobody comes up my driveway without the dogs sounding off.

"No guns please, we're liberals . . . "

It's scary how much my husband and I think alike sometimes. We both told the t.v. screen that a .357 would be useful, also. LOL!

GMA should have just run the “Home Alone” movie over their time slot. We could have learned how to trip op burglars with marbles and by hitting them in the face with paint cans. Throw in a remote control car, and your security system is on par with Fort Knox.

There might be a business opportunity here: for plastic cacti with needles. Of course, these would do nothing to offset global warming, and might create a recycling problem.
