Let Taiwan In
contentions ^ | 7.23.2007 | Gordon Chang

On Friday, the Taipei government announced that it had applied for U.N. membership under its commonly used name, Taiwan. Previous attempts to gain admission under the official designation of Republic of China have failed, due to opposition from Beijing.

The Mainland was quick to denounce Taipei’s most recent move. “We resolutely oppose it,” said Liu Jianchao, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman. “The Taiwan authorities’ attempt to split China will absolutely not succeed.” Beijing’s is not the only government that is peeved. I predict that the Bush administration will, as a means of expressing its irritation at President Chen Shui-bian’s attempt to assert his nation’s sovereignty, offer no meaningful support to Taiwan’s bid.

One cool thing about letting Taiwan in. We can now have fights on the floor of the UN, just like in the Taiwanese Legislature.

The UN is a monumental waste of time, money and other resources.

  1. Withdraw the USA from the UN.
  2. Expel the UN from US soil.
  3. Cease all funding of the UN and its related organizations.
All diplomacy, trade negotiations and foreign aid can be easily managed directly.

Taiwan’s bid will fail. The U.S. will do nothing to risk upsetting our Chinese ‘friends’.

naw, the next _______ for food scandal will keep the current members pacified. Let Taiwan in....it is about time someone slapped china's face. Through china's votes and various other actions by china at the un (the little body of tyrants), I believe it time to lower the boom on china diplomatically. It may prevent another front in this War. Maybe china will get the message, and be hands off Taiwan.

Taiwan as an independent nation has been a fact since about 1949. Once a mere province in the greater Empire of China, when the empire was fragmented, China became a number of autonomous districts, with no central government until the rise of the People’s Republic of China. Other provinces were integrated into the Communist government largely by force of arms, not really a bottom-up popular movement.

Taiwan is a bottom-up representative republic, with elected representatives with some widely divergent views on the various aspects of how a country should be governed, but even from all this diversity, some consensus has emerged, and that consensus almost universally rejects forming a political union with mainland China.

Almost universally. There is still a small minority that would cheerfully accept union with mainland China.

After watching those fights, I'd say so.

THIS is the right time.

With the upcoming 2008 olympics, the chicoms will be under pressure to be nice between now and then. After August of 2008 they’ll be no reason for niceties.

If Taiwan has any chance it is BEFORE the olympics.

True - but let’s remember this has officially been our policy for 30-plus years.

If the U.S. government doesn’t fully support this, they need to be denounced for the unprincipled cowards that they are.

Hell, there is probably a majority of democrats who would
accept the same thing.
