On Friday, the Taipei government announced that it had applied for U.N. membership under its commonly used name, Taiwan. Previous attempts to gain admission under the official designation of Republic of China have failed, due to opposition from Beijing.
The Mainland was quick to denounce Taipeis most recent move. We resolutely oppose it, said Liu Jianchao, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman. The Taiwan authorities attempt to split China will absolutely not succeed. Beijings is not the only government that is peeved. I predict that the Bush administration will, as a means of expressing its irritation at President Chen Shui-bians attempt to assert his nations sovereignty, offer no meaningful support to Taiwans bid.

One cool thing about letting Taiwan in. We can now have fights on the floor of the UN, just like in the Taiwanese Legislature.
We should elect the Taiwan Parliament to the US Congress!..........C-Span would then be worth watching!.........
I’m with you on this matter. To hell with letting Taiwan in, Get us the hell out.
Taiwan’s bid will fail. The U.S. will do nothing to risk upsetting our Chinese ‘friends’.
I especially like the one with the guy on the table kicking!..............
Taiwan as an independent nation has been a fact since about 1949. Once a mere province in the greater Empire of China, when the empire was fragmented, China became a number of autonomous districts, with no central government until the rise of the People’s Republic of China. Other provinces were integrated into the Communist government largely by force of arms, not really a bottom-up popular movement.
Taiwan is a bottom-up representative republic, with elected representatives with some widely divergent views on the various aspects of how a country should be governed, but even from all this diversity, some consensus has emerged, and that consensus almost universally rejects forming a political union with mainland China.
Almost universally. There is still a small minority that would cheerfully accept union with mainland China.
I agree. I like your idea better, but regrettably US will stay in the un.
After watching those fights, I'd say so.
THIS is the right time.
With the upcoming 2008 olympics, the chicoms will be under pressure to be nice between now and then. After August of 2008 they’ll be no reason for niceties.
If Taiwan has any chance it is BEFORE the olympics.
My fav is the woman putting a garbage pail over her opponent’s head.
True - but let’s remember this has officially been our policy for 30-plus years.
I didn’t see that one! Must have blinked!.......Is it on the YouTube video?.....
Yes it is... its the woman with a red dress. looked like he takes the pail off, and tries to then put on someone else.
If the U.S. government doesn’t fully support this, they need to be denounced for the unprincipled cowards that they are.
There is still a small minority that would cheerfully accept union with mainland China.
Hell, there is probably a majority of democrats who would
accept the same thing.
