A blog written by antiwar activist Cindy Sheehan and posted on MichaelMoore.com criticizes Charlotte police for allowing counter-protesters to "try to intimidate us" during Sheehan's antiwar rally Tuesday in Bryant Park.
But in a memo to top police administrators, one captain said officers had no issues during the two-hour event and expressed surprise at the complaints.
"At the School of the Assassins in Columbus, GA, and in Charlotte, NC, we ran into similar problems: police presence that seemed to be there to foster violence. At both places the neo-Nazi, pro-war fascist group "Gathering of Eagles" came out to mostly try to intimidate us from our mission," Sheehan writes in her blog.
"At Ft. Benning, after we complained, the police kept them separate from us, but in Charlotte, the police refused saying that the Eagles had their rights to `freedom of speech.' "
Sheehan, one of the best-known opponents of the war in Iraq, stayed in her car during the antiwar rally at Bryant Park that drew about 125 people.
Instead of addressing the crowd -- some of her supporters said there was concern about her safety -- Sheehan moved to Talley's Green Grocery in Dilworth.
In a police memo dated July 19, Capt. Doug Gallant, who reviewed and evaluated the event in Bryant Park, said he was "quite frankly, surprised there have been complaints...."
The police memo says the 14 officers on hand noticed no displays that violated North Carolina law. One protester began using profanity, the memo says, and an officer asked the person to stop cursing.
The memo also says that police didn't have to bring in physical barriers, like bike racks, to keep the groups away from each other. At one point, Sheehan's security advisor said she had concerns about the Gathering of Eagles, and officers asked the group to move back, creating a buffer of at least 25 feet.

Interesting take Sheehan has on the First Amendment. Evidently wants to ban speech that she disagrees with. She especially wants to ban the speech of "neocons." I have no doubt that she would have wanted to ban Churchill's speaches that denounced Hitler because mean old Churchill was not talking nice to Hitler.
I don't believe that the First Amendment protects violent speech, especially if it is one of the neocons or their media supporters calling for increased violence in the Middle East.

So Sheehan has a problem with protesters? She believes dissenting speech should be squashed? Sheehan believes everyone should bow to the beliefs of the speaker? How ironic.

Another irony: Apparently Sheehan has no faith that words and negotiations are effective. She believes that violence (in this case armed police action) is the only answer to conflict. Does this make her pro-war?

Also love that she feels GOE, which is almost all Vietnam vets, is a "Neo-Nazi, pro-war fascist group". What does that make her son, Specialist Casey Sheehan, who made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq? Her meal ticket?

Sheehan: "I dont believe that the First Amendment protects violent speech,
especially if it is one of the neocons or their media supporters ..."
So the First Amendment is only for the left. Just for the sake of clarity, we need to rename it "Freedom of Liberal Speech".

Hear, hear! Charlotte is a bad place, Cindy. So is the rest of the state. If I were you I would never come back.
And I thank God I’m not you.

Create an issue and fear for your well being because of the issue you created.
It should be a mandate that the picture of a box of rocks is shown at the start of all Sheehan threads.

WOW!
Just took the time to read this.
Ban-Sheehan is off her rocker.
A lot of people have commented on this passage, but they left out her half-baked conclusion.
Freedom of speech is one thing, but I dont believe that the First Amendment protects violent speech, especially if it is one of the neocons or their media supporters calling for increased violence in the Middle East. Nothing about our movement promotes or calls for violence...
Cindy, I emphatically disagree.
If you are going to follow the rest of the Stalinists in The Left today and actively seek to silence speech that you and they do not agree with, and if you succeed in silencing that speech, I would argue that there is PLENTY in your movement that promotes AND calls for violence.

Somebody needs to tell Cindy that it is only her side that resorts to violence. Methinks she doth protest a bit too much.

I thought she retired or decided to go into hiding in a cave somewhere?
Sheehan is a very mentally disturbed person.Maybe that fat slob Michael Moore can help her. They can both go to Cuba for medical care.

Proof Cindy is a lying sack of Sheehan. http://www.wsoctv.com/news/13694862/detail.html
Click on the link, note the reporter at the end remarking how the rally was a nonthingburger. I believe the quote is "As you can see behind me, not much going on."

According to Cindy and her ilk, Cindy is the one who made the ultimate sacrifice. Casey? Oh yeah, him. He died for nothin ya know. Maybe she thinks he died to make her famous and rich.
These people are so sick so disgusting. How did such a bottom feeder like that spawn an honorable man and hero like Casey Sheehan?
