President Bush yesterday said Americans will soon realize they need the immigrants and foreign temporary workers that would have been allowed by his immigration bill, which was defeated in the Senate last month.

Mr. Bush, in a town hall session in Nashville, Tenn., also refused to say whether he will pardon two U.S. Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting a fleeing drug-smuggling suspect, saying the prosecutor was a friend of his who made his case to the jury that convicted the agents.

If Mr. Bush was hoping the immigration issue would disappear after his bill's failure, those hopes were dashed, as he was asked repeatedly about border security during the forum — meant to highlight his commitment to cutting the deficit.

"The bill failed and I can't make a prediction to you at this point, sir, where it's going to head," the president told one questioner. "I can make you a prediction, though, that pretty shortly people are going to be knocking on people's doors saying, man, we're running out of workers."

Mr. Bush said there are workers who will do jobs Americans aren't doing in the agriculture sector in particular, and without them the jobs will go unfilled.

Exactly...so why do I have to press 1 for English? And the only other option is Spanish??? What that means is there are either a lot more Hispanics than you are suggesting or they are pandering to only one group of immigrants ..."everyone has to speak English....except Mexicans..."

I don't agree with President Bush at all on this issue.

Wouldn’t it be nice if American kids can go back to these starter jobs that got them experienced in the workplace rather than have illegals turn them into career moves?

Illegals hurt the foundation of our young Americans who normally take those jobs. Kids also get too embarrassed to be working next to someone they know is illegal, it is demeaning to teens who are always sensitive to everything.

Before illegals spread more so through the country, places like Utah had zero trouble filling the beginning job with high school and college kids.

Also, they cost us in California $14,000 per illegal child that attends a public school.
On average illegals have 3 kids, so that is $42k a year before all the medical costs hit society.

Let the ones who want to come in do so through temporary visas by way of set up part time employment centers.
Have data bases with pictures for social security and temporary visas and if the employee doesn’t match the papers, fire them or give nice yearly $25k fines for each offense to the employers.

Go after employers and illegal will have no jobs and will have to go back.

I've never stated anywhere or anytime that I'm in favor of illegal immigrants. The only thing I've done is question the wisdom of those who seem to think the easy answer is to round them up and deport them.

Since I've never argued for the merits of the so-called "economic benefits" brought by illegals, then this question has no merit in our discussion.

Since you seem to have the completely wrong idea about my position on this issue, allow to illuminate you. I am not in favor of illegal immigration. I, as you, want this problem corrected. I want the border secured and all the illegals held accountable for coming here illegally. I just do not see the fix needed to be such as what you are calling for. I also do not see all illegal immigrants as being these horrid little creatures you seem to want to make them out to be. Yes, many illegals are horribly criminals. Yes, these horrible criminals need to be held accountable for their crimes. Yes, we need to stop the flow of illegals into our nation, and demand that those who come here legally come here to become Americans and not extensions of their home country. But, there must be a sensible approach to accomplishing these goals, and not just a knee-jerk emotions based approach as I've seen advocated on these threads. I do not agree with the plan as put forward by the Bush Administration, but I can understand why that plan was developed. Something needs to be done, and that was a first (if bad) attempt. These problems were not created overnight, and will not be solved in one attempt. Patients will be needed as anyone who has studied our form of government should know that our government works slowly. A fast-food "I want it done now" approach has never worked in the past, and won't work for this problem either.

It simply amazes me the amount of experts on issues like illegal immigration that exists on threads like this. You must travel a lot to know that noone in this country who employs illegals or tracks the employment of same is involved in collecting taxes on their pay. Funny how the states are knowingly allowing farmers and others to get away without paying taxes, or knowingly allowing illegals to get away without paying taxes. Yes, the IRS would not ever be interested in collecting taxes from these employees or employers. So, tell me, o’great one, where are your sources to back up what you say I did not see with my own eyes?
