FBI: Iraqis Being Smuggled Across the Rio Grande
ABC ^ | July 17, 2007 3:11 PM | Brian Ross

Brian Ross Reports:

Fbiiraqisbein_mn

The FBI is investigating an alleged human smuggling operation based in Chaparral, N.M., that agents say is bringing "Iraqis and other Middle Eastern" individuals across the Rio Grande from Mexico.

An FBI intelligence report distributed by the Washington, D.C. Joint Terrorism Task Force, obtained by the Blotter on ABCNews.com, says the illegal ring has been bringing Iraqis across the border illegally for more than a year.

Border Patrol officials in the area said they were unaware of the specifics of the FBI's report, and federal prosecutors in New Mexico told ABCNews.com they had no current cases involving the illegal smuggling of Iraqis.

The FBI report, issued last week, says the smuggling organization "used to smuggle Mexicans, but decided to smuggle Iraqi or other Middle Eastern individuals because it was more lucrative." Each individual would be charged a fee of $20,000 to $25,000, according to the report.

The people to be smuggled would "gather at a house on the Mexican side of the border" and then cross the Rio Grande into the U.S., the report says.

Should we be surprised? Smugglers who take poor Mexicans last dime and leave them to die in the desert or in the back of a truck would have no qualms whatsoever about bringing in terrorists for money. We need to close the damn border.

These are probably Chaldean Catholics who are fleeing persecution in Iraq.

I don't care what they claim they claim they are. Throw their asses out?

About 2 million Iraqis have fled Iraq since the invasion. Unfortunately most of these are the better educated, etc. which leaves those who don’t have the money or attributes to kickstart the economy unless they are with the underworld, the back-alley business sector.

Well, it's the fault of all those racist gringos that stopped
"comprehensive immigration reform". (/SARC)
(At least I'd expect that sort of assertion over at DU!!!)

You’re not kidding. My gut just knotted into a 9 on the Chertoff Scale. “I have a feeling...” may be the new PC way of saying “INCOMING”.

Are you seriously suggesting this? As someone currently living on the Mexican side of the border (but an American citizen) I can tell you that Chaldeans are not the problem. If they are experiencing bona fide persecution then they can petition for legal entry. Sins problemas. This is infiltration of enemies who pay the coyotes more than fellow Mexicans. The FBI would not be worried about Chaldean Christians. This is a war, not a religious matter.

The nature of the invader will continuously change. They built a great one in China. I think we can build a better one.

To make matters worse, Chaparral, NM appears to be on the Ft. Bliss Military Installation.

Chaparral is on the TX-NM border and sandwiched between the Fort Bliss headquarters area to the south and the desert warfare practice area to the north. I suspect that the human smugglers come across the river in the area to the east of El Paso in the same vicinity where the two BP agents shot the drug smuggler and are now serving 10-20 years for that "crime".

The FBI also announced a month ago that 60 Taliban had snuck across the Texas border en route to Ft. Huachaca.

A link for that? Fort Huachuca is hundreds of miles to the west of Texas in southern Arizona.

Relevant Snip of Transcribed Interview

(snip)

Duncan Hunter: Well, sure. I think we can. And the point is, going back to Mexico is not the end of the world. Mexico is a wonderful country. It has enormous natural resources. We have put billions of dollars into Mexico to give them an economic shot in the arm.

And you know something else, a lot of folks that come to the United States, who are here illegally, have homes in other countries. Now one reason politicians in Mexico City like the open border, is because people come across and send back billions of dollars. The last figure I saw was between 6 – 10 billion dollars a year, of money that they make in the United States to their real homes, in this case in Mexico. But other people come from lots of other countries. In fact in the year 2005 we apprehended, and these are just the folks we caught, we caught a 155 thousand people coming across the border from Mexico that weren’t just citizens of Mexico. They came from virtually every country in the world, including 1100 folks from communist China and a few folks from North Korea and Iran. So the idea that the guy that got smuggled into this country in December because he had an affective smuggler, has the right to have citizenship in the United States, I can’t accept that.

Once again, a whole lot of folks that are here have second homes or have original homes. To make them an American citizen would basically be giving them 2 citizenships....
