On a rare dry evening last week I walked to a meeting in London. The streets were full and the pubs overflowing with drinkers, many of whom are on the pavements because of the smoking ban: people having a good time at the end of an average working day, smiling and joshing each other. Too often we forget that we have built a successful and good-natured society over the last 10 years at the same time as absorbing a million or more people from scores of countries around the world. If you ever wanted to see the accumulated virtue of British culture you might start with the humour, consideration, tolerance, generosity and all-round nous to be found in any mixed gathering anywhere in these islands.
It is on this society that al-Qaeda has declared a particular war. The people having a good time are the ones that al-Qaeda wishes to blow apart and maim and intimidate with its bloody plots and fantasies. The recent failed attacks in Glasgow and London, the guilty verdicts of the 21 July bombers and the statement by bin Laden's deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri promising a precise response to the knighthood for Salman Rushdie make it plain that Britain is the prime target for al-Qaeda in the West. There are 80 extremist groups in the Midlands, 60 in Leeds and Bradford and 35 in London. Some estimates put the number of people who need watching at 3,000. According to the security services, the time in which groups move from radicalism to action is shortening.

So, I take it nothing will happen till something does happen? Any idication if the Glasgow and London group(s) were being even watched prior to? Feelin’ it’s a slow burning fuse & waiting for the eventual bang.
I couldn't agree more, but the liberals (e.g., Nancy and Harry) just don't get it. They think the mental tact that Chamberlain took in the late 1930's will work here. This is why my son and all of our troops fight them over there so we don’t have them blowing us up on our own streets in this country. It comes to my mind that the claims that Harry and Nancy and others keep making that Iraq is the wrong place to fight Al Qaeda fails the acid test miserably. Where on this planet have Al Qaeda attacks happened? Somalia? Nairobi, Kenya? Dar es Salaam, Tanzania? Yemeni port of Aden? The Philippines? New York City (twice)? London England? Have I missed any locations (probably)? Are these places in Afghanistan (which is were these liberal idiots keep claiming the real war is)? So, where is Al Qaeda based? Only in Afghanistan? And for those who claim Al Qaeda was not in Iraq before 2003, BS. Musab al Zarqawi was in Iraq (having fled Afghanistan after the U.S. invasion) in 2002, nearly a year before the U.S. invaded Iraq. Do these people really believe he went to Iraq all by himself? That he did not recruit others into his branch of Al Qaeda? Lemmings appear to believe this. Do not these people know that Iraq under Hussein harbored other terrorists even before the 1991 war? Again, lemmings.

If their existence is known by the government, why is it that these perps are still free? I guess that the West is waiting for the mushroom cloud to appear before taking appropriate action, and even then it will be half-assed.
I believe you are correct. My son’s main AO has been in the Mahmudiyah area south of Baghdad, which is very close to where your son is fighting, and the same area where the 101st soldiers and the 10th Mountain solders were ambushed and abducted almost one year apart from each other. I thank you for your sacrifice, and give my thanks to your son for his. My prayers go out for the success of mission and your son’s safe return home. Godspeed to you and yours.

Because in countries based on English Law (such as the US and England!) wishing someone ill is not sufficient to arrest them. They must commit a crime. You might just as well ask America why all the gang members are allowed to run around free. The police know who the gang members are and they know what they do, so why wait until they commit a crime? Just round them up and throw away the key. Internment without trial has a poor history in both of our countries.

The Observer is now owned by The Guardian, hence the out-left comments from many. You must remember that many of these people believe that Stalin won WW2 and the UK/US/Canadian/ANZAC etc activities were just a sideshow. Similarly, it was Gorbachev and Gorbachev alone who ended the Cold War according to them and so on. Naturally they display the usual lefty trait of hurling insults at anyone who dares argue.

I don’t think that you should compare terrorists with gang members. If that were true, you’d have to wait for the terrorists to open fire before being allowed to respond in kind. Oops, I think we’re already doing that.

This view of Britain might provoke a grimace of disbelief in quite a few Freepers, and indeed has been fairly difficult to sustain in recent years. But anyone who was in or around London 10 days ago, on July 7th, would have seen the biggest and happiest street party in the City probably since the Coronation of 1953. Four million people happily thronged to watch the two opening stages of the Tour de France. About 6% of the population of these islands gathered for a single purpose, and with such good humour that only 3 arrests were made over the two days.And this on the second anniversary of the 7/7 bombings and barely a week after the failed car bomb attacks. An altogether admirable, and very British two-finger gesture to the terrorists.
