Signal to Attack? Worries Over Latest al Qaeda Tape Share

Signaltoattac_mn Fearing a possible coded signal to attack, U.S. intelligence and law enforcement officials are studying an unusual pattern of words in the latest audiotape from al Qaeda's No. 2 man, Ayman al Zawahri.

On the tape, posted on the Internet Wednesday, Zawahri repeats one phrase three times at the end of his message.

Have I not conveyed? Oh God be my witness.

A new FBI analysis of al Qaeda messages, obtained by the Blotter on ABCNews.com, warns that "continued messages that convey their strategic intent to strike the U.S. homeland and U.S. interests worldwide should not be discounted as merely deceptive noise."

Intelligence analysts are also investigating technical clues that Zawahri's most recent audio message was phoned in via computer phone, using voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP.

I doubt that the only thing standing between us and another deadly terrorist attack on our home soil is orders from their leader to launch the attack. He can speak all the code he wants, even blink his eyes in morse code if he wants, but the truth is they will attack when they feel the time is right. I don’t think they will depend on a tape from this guy to signal the start of something.

Hate to get serious when everyone is having so much fun here, but the first thing that came to my mind was the protocol used when firing an especially dangerous weapon. You repeat the command three times so there’s no mistake.

Heh, they're coming out with a Get Smart movie! We saw the previews the other night at Order of the Phoenix. Steve Carrell is playing Maxwell Smart. I never really got into the TV show, because I liked the real spy shows like "Man From U.N.C.L.E." better. ;o)
