DETROIT -- As Susan Milligan noted in today's Globe, Republican presidential hopefuls have largely shied away from appearing before organizations and groups deemed to have a liberal slant. But don't tell that to US Representative Tom Tancredo of Colorado, the lone GOP candidate to appear this morning at the NAACP's annual convention in Detroit.
After he came out, Tancredo wandered around the empty stage, not knowing which podium to use. "Oh, right here?" he said when led to the center lectern. "Oh my gosh, this is amazing."
"Do you think we should wait a few minutes to see if these other guys show up?" Tancredo said, drawing a big laugh from the crowd. "Do they know something I don't know, is that it? I think actually I know something that they don't know."
That line drew a loud cheer from the audience, clearly appreciative that Tancredo had bothered to show up. He used his opening remarks to talk about his signature issue, illegal immigration, and how it was hurting American workers, and especially African-American workers. Tancredo said he gets "insulted" every time he hears that illegal immigrants are working jobs American citizens won't take.
"I've done those jobs, you've done those jobs, our kids have done those jobs," he said.

"There is no constitutional role of the federal government to have the Department of Education. I dont believe we should have the U.S. Department of Education."

I’m still doing those type jobs......
From Detroit Free Press:
Earlier in the day, and standing in the middle of 10 podiums, nine of them empty but waiting for Republican candidates, U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo asked, Do you think we should wait a few minutes to see if these other guys show up?
The Colorado Republican was the only one of 10 GOP candidates who accepted an invitation to speak at the convention.
Do they know something that I dont know, Tancredo said. The fact is that I know something that they dont. We may not agree on all issues, but we do have a very common cause that the playing field is level for everyone, and the gates of opportunity are open for all.
One of the leading critics of immigration legislation on Congress, Tancredo used his three-minute opening statement to talk about the issue, calling it one of the most serious domestic problems facing the nation.
The federal government refuses to do its job, he said.
The audience gave Tancredo a standing ovation, more because he was the only Republican to show up, rather than approving of his stance on issues.
Tancredo will make a superb SecDHS in the Thompson administration
What can they say that Tom didn't?
We all worked these jobs as teenagers.
No, I`m not going to say it,..... Tom Fans, knock yourselves out, your boy was a hit at the NAACP., CANGRATS
Wonder how that reporter knew that.
Fred will make a good Atty General in the Tancredo Administration
Reporter did not want to admit that blacks are as equally repulsed about illegal alien amnesty as Tancredo is.
Liberals (and liberal media) have a major problem when they support an issue that one of their voting/support blocs do not support.
That was my thought as well. Can't believe a thing you read nowadays.
I was not knocking Tancredo in any way. His presence in the campign has been good for the GOP..it’s focused the party on the immigration issue. However, in the 6 or so before the primaries effectively decide the nominee, if candidates haven’t been able to gain some traction int he polls, then the GOP field needs to be thinned for the upcoming series of debates..
Either way, to have both of them in high profile, high responsibility positions would be good for us.
I like Thompson, President, Tancredo, VP
If you think that Fred Thompson would put Tancredo anywhere in his administration, then you have an enormous misunderstanding of where Fred Thompson stands on the issues.
Thompson, for instance, believes that there should be a pathway to legal status for people who have broken our laws by coming here illegally.
Huckabee and Gilmore could bow out soon, though Huckabee spoke in front of the NEA (the only GOP candidate to do so).
I think most of Tanc’s political marbles are in Iowa.
You should've not said it.
I thought that Thompson was fairly clear in his opposition to illegal immigrants getting a pathway. Can you please site a source/link for your statement? Thanks
Then about 20 million illegal immigrants flooded in and suddenly we have a "worker shortage" and blacks need not apply. Imagine the gains a candidate might make who simply pointed this out to black voters.
LOL
Oh, I knew you werent making a jab at Tancredo. He would make a great DHS chief.
If Fred Thompson doesnt get the nomination, he would make an excellent Atty General. No jab at FDT meant from me.
May the best man win
