The backyard grill: American tradition or potential crime scene?
Canonsburg Mayor Anthony Colaizzo issued an executive order this week banning the use of grills -- propane, charcoal and wood -- after 8 p.m. in this town of 8,825 known for its grandiose Fourth of July parades.

We have a no burning ban, but I got around that by always keeping food near my firepit. That way when the cops stop I tell them it's a cooking fire and they go away. Espically helpful as the entire neighborhood often gathers in my yard for block parties, Halloween and other holidays. Everybody brings whatever they have to burn. Admittedly sometimes the flames do get a little big, hehehe!
I wouldn't be surpsied if Crafton gets a no grilling ban too. Sigh...the great socialist cesspool that is Western Pennsylvania!

I’d go to the next city council meeting and question the mayor’s legal authority to write law without going through the council.
If a mayor tried that here in my area he would be recalled and thrown out of office.
Correct. It seems we have an infection of EOâs around the country, especially in the Second Amendment area. What happened to property rights?
My guess is this will be the last term for this Mayor...what an idiot.
Sounds painful.
And all because one guy is bothered by one neighbor.
Everyone should attend the council meeting armed with grill tongs.
Not grilling in the summertime is......UN-AMERICAN!!!
I’ll give up my grill when they pry my cold dead fingers from around it!
If a mayor tried that here in my area he would be recalled and thrown out of office.

Especially in the UP where the sun is still high in the sky at 8:00.
It’s my understanding that EOs are used to manage the various departments and personnel under control of the executive.
So the mayor can write EOs stating at what time the road crews will report to work or what color to paint the walls in the city hall.
But to write an EO telling citizens what activities they may engage in are way out of the mayor’s legal influence. Citizens are not members of the executive branch and are not subject to executive EOs. Citizens are duly ruled only through legislative acts carried out by the legislature, in this case the city council.
Americans need to read a few basic civic books to understand the roles of citizens and how they relate to the executive and the legislature.
This mayor needs to be fired and then run out of the community. In fact, I would have no problem with the citizens meeting wih the electred sheriff of the county and instructing him to arrest this mayor for gross misfeasance.
In Georgia, we consider the smoke from a charcoal fire wafting over our yard to be a GOOD thing. Dog agrees.
"Now you can't even eat a weenie at night! You've got to eat your weenies before eight," said Barb Mavrich, 58, a librarian who said the ruling was the talk of the town.
Um, I'm sure that a librarian could discreetly eat weenies at any time, Barb, just don't do it out on the porch ;)
Where I lived in PA, not only was it a good thing, it was like rolling out the welcome mat for neighbors to stop over.
Did anyone standup, flip this mayor off, and tell him where he could stick his “Executive Order”?
One of my keys is in trouble.
NANNY
I agree. If you get caught grilling, the cop still has to issue a citation noting the city ordinance or state statute you have violated. Kinda hard to ticket a fellow for “because the mayor said so”, I’d think. Although, if you can get arrested and tossed in the pokey for “failure to water your lawn” as happened in Utah, I guess anything’s possible in this ‘land of the free’.
