A moviegoer caught secretly recording the sci-fi blockbuster "Transformers" has been charged with unauthorized use of a video camera in a theater in the first arrest under a new New York City law that stiffened penalties for pirating films.

A criminal complaint accuses Kalidou Diallo of slipping a video recorder, video player and remote control into a sneak preview of the film at a Bronx theater Monday night.

"This is the first time someone has been arrested and charged with the new illegal camcording law," City Hall spokesman Jason Post said Thursday.

In May, Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed legislation that upgraded film piracy from a violation with a $250 fine to a misdemeanor that carries up to six months in jail and penalties of up to $5,000.

Remember Amadou Diallo, whom the NYPD turned into swiss cheese years ago? His "profession" was selling pirated movies on street corners in NYC. One wonders if this is his brother, or cousin, or just a wild coincidence of names. If his family, what a contribution his family is making to America! Gotta love that 3rd world immigration.

That doesn't seem too high to me for such a crime.

There are pirated copies of '300' everywhere you turn. The movie will be released July 31 however.

I'm surprised it is not higher either. Bloomburg is using every trick in the book to raise money in NYC. enforcing revenue-generating laws like these is just one example.

Kinda funny for a movie in which a character tells the feds, “Sure, I downloaded 4000 songs off the internet — but who hasn’t?? Who hasn’t??”

For those who didn’t get the last reference I made, Amadou had the misfortune of running into cops using the catch phrase, “It’s Giuliani time!”

Your post made think of Massachusetts' new law requiring "everybody" to have health insurance.

"Whatch you in for?"
"Me, killing my grandmother for beer money. House bout you?"
"Me, I was late wid me premiums to my HMO and dey ratted me out to the cops."

I'm waiting for the first prosecution under Massachusetts' new law. Eight'll get ya 13 it won't be an "undocumented worker".
