LISBON, Portugal Monuments in three Latin American countries were named among the new seven wonders of the world Saturday.
Brazil's , Peru's , and Mexico's pyramid were chosen alongside the Great Wall of China, Jordan's Petra, the Colosseum in Rome and India's Taj Mahal.
The sites were selected according to a tally of around 100 million votes cast by people around the world over the Internet and by cell phone text messages, the nonprofit organization that conducted the poll said.

Many in the 50,000-member audience at a soccer stadium jeered when the United States' Statue of Liberty was announced as one of the candidates. Portugal was broadly opposed to the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

I would have voted for Chartres catherdral or St. Peter’s, Rome, but since they weren’t options, I abstained.

The Portuguese? You mean even THEY don’t like us? Shock, horror.
The women have mustaches and the men make good waiters. Good weather though. The energetic went to Brazil and the others remained home to be ankle biters. How pathetic.

S. Peters Basilica is the greatest church in the world. The church is composed by 450 statues, 500 columns, 50 altars and it has a capacity to hold 60.000 people. Few are disappointed when they enter the sumptuously decorated basilica, whose interior contain 11 chapels, 45 altars, and precious works of art. The Michelangelos vast dome, affectionately called by the Romans il cupolone, gives unity to the interior of the basilica. |
but since they werent options, I abstained.
I would have leaned toward your choices as well.
Too bad this was merely an internet / cellphone poll and as such has no intellectual / academic standing

I remember reading a funny tag line once. It said;”Portugal, Celebrating 800 years of decline.”. Ok, I thought it was funny, but I’m a geek.

If their lowbrow, Leftist sentiment exuded at the soccer stadium is any representation of Portuguese Culture today, I would suggest that the phrase you refer to is right on target :-)

I dont see how the Statue of Liberty could be one. Mt. Rushmore would have been a better choice, imo.

So many wonders, so little time. The St. Louis Arch is a remarkable achievement. Dubai might have something, too. But neither of these top a few molecules of DNA.

Dubai might have something, too.
QE2 sold as $100m floating Dubai hotel
In Dubai, the prospect of providing a new home for the QE2 was greeted with enthusiasm as the resort tries to establish itself as a"global tourist destination." Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, chairman of the Government-owned Dubai World, the developers of the Palm Jumeirah, described the ship as"one of the wonders of the maritime world." It would, he claimed, have a new home at"the newest wonder of the world." |
|
But neither of these top a few molecules of DNA.
This unscientific internet / cellphone poll covered only architectural wonders, not the Wonders of God's Creation.
From the article:
"Weber said he was starting a new campaign Sunday to choose the new seven natural wonders of the world."
We'll just have to see if DNA is an available voting option :-)

The morons probably don't even know the statue was made by a French sculptor.
