Take this for what it's worth- an anecdote from a small southern city, population 16,000.

Local talk radio is about what you'd expect- mostly local issues... the school board, zoning, some state and national stuff.

Even the token liberals who call in usually aren't too bad, except when they regurgitate DNC talking points...

I have never before ( not even during the worst of the Clinton years ) heard so much white-hot, sputtering, stuttering anger over any other issue than this one.

I recognize nearly all the regular callers by voice- we have never had so many new callers, so damn mad they could hardly talk.

Their voices shook with anger, disgust, and revulsion that so many of our so-called "representatives" could act in such an insensitive, high-handed fashion towards the people they allegedly represent.

Will they remember all this come the next election?

I can't say, except to say that if they do, incumbents- regardless of party- are in a heap O' trouble.

Novak attributes the opposition to “xenophobia.” We’re all just neurotic you know.

Novak reaches a new low here:

“.. its opponents reacted to the xenophobia of their backers ...”

When you can’t stun em with the FACTS- go for distortion.

Novak must be willfully UNAWARE of what was in the bill- yet is only too happy to smear us all as racists. He’s an ignorant fool.

“Republicans drove another nail in George W. Bush’s political coffin and undermined hopes for the growing, winnable Hispanic vote.”

First, Mr. Novak, George Bush does not need any help driving nails into his coffin. He has proven himself quite capable (could be hereditary).

Winnable Hispanic vote?

All of my adult life, I have been a fan of Robert Novak. But when reading this particular column, I am unsure if that will continue.

I hate Amnesty with almost the disdain that I hold for old “snaggle tooth’ here. Novak... a poser placed to bring down Conservatives wherever possible. He is the very definition of “covert agent for evil”!

Col. George Custer would have lived to see his grandchildren if he’d have had the good sense of Mitch McConnell. Discretion was definitely the better part of valor.

Novak writes, "It is difficult to exaggerate the pessimism about the immediate political future voiced by Republicans in Congress when not on the record. With an unpopular president waging an unpopular war, they see electoral catastrophe in 2008."

I unfortunately agree with this assessment.

Republicans drove another nail in George W. Bush's political coffin and undermined hopes for the growing, winnable Hispanic vote. Contending the time "wasn't now" for immigration, McConnell added: "It wasn't the people's will. And they were heard." He was blaming Republican failure on his fellow citizens, which seldom works in politics.

Novak is such an a$$ and clueless. This was a win for the people. Only 26% of the people supported the bill yet the political elites tried to ram it down our throats. Novak also fails to mention that 15 Dems [including Sanders] voted against cloture as part of the total of 53. Only 12 Reps voted for cloture along with 34 Dems. In point of fact this was a Dem bill supported by the WH.

"xenophobia"

This is getting tiresome.

'Un-American', 'Bigots', 'Racists', 'Nativists', 'Troglodytes' (my personal fav), NAZIS (yesterday's NY Slimes) and now 'Xenophobes'.

Well, sorry oh Masters of The Universe but name calling won't work. As my mama used to tell me, 'Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me'. Plus, I've been called worse by better.

Now enforce the dam laws, deport the ILLEGALS aaaaaand build the freaking FENCE!

"If this were a war, Sen. McConnell should be relieved of command for dereliction of duty."

I would say that is true, but it was because he had his little closed door meeting with reed and agreed to bring a dead bill back under rules, that limited debate and that were contrived to bypass the will of the people.

My e-mail to the white house and various senators: Mr. President, perhaps you and I have one thing in common, our strong feelings about the issue of illegal immigration. It should be obvious to even the most casual observer that you have to do something other than the status quo or the provisions of the senate bill.

Until we have security and some semblance of border control, most Americans will not support any benefits, amnesty, or whatever you want to do to help the illegal immigrant. This is the basic problem with your philosophy and those who supported the legislation. Security first. Then we will listen to other changes.

You need to impress upon us that you care more about us then you do illegal immigrants. And some of us have relatives waiting years to get in and the people you support can walk across tonight. THEY MUST GET IN LINE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!

Here is my proposal. Feel free to run with it.

1. Do the job you swore to do. Enforce the current laws. Support and reinforce the officers working the border. Support a federal law directing local police and other law enforcement to take action to detain and initiate deportation of those here illegally. Jail employers of illegal immigrants.

2. No benefits for those in the country illegally. Exception, those with true emergency medical conditions will receive treatment while their deportation is initiated.

3. Initiate a constitutional amendment to stop the anchor baby phenomenon.

4. Build the fence.

5. Change the immigration quotas to reflect real needs justified by industry and/or states. Make the justifications public. So the average American knows how many we are allowing in and why. We will support something logical, fair, and needed AFTER our security is taken care of.

Milton Friedman: A country cannot simultaneously be a welfare state and have open borders.

McConnell added: "It wasn't the people's will. And they were heard." He was blaming Republican failure on his fellow citizens, which seldom works in politics.

No, Mitch, the failure is with a leaderless, RINO infested GOP Senate contingent that has lost track of its constituency. You've put yourselves above those who voted you into office. The fall will be critical to your incumbency.

McConnell was among six switchers who voted no after the 40 senators needed to kill the bill were recorded. Another late switcher was Sen. Sam Brownback, seeking the Republican presidential nomination as the candidate of the Right. He voted on Tuesday to keep the immigration bill alive. On Thursday, he voted again for the bill. But when it became clear the measure had failed, he changed his vote from aye to nay...
..."This isn't a day to celebrate," McConnell said in his post-mortem, contradicting victory cheers by DeMint and Gingrich.

"In such an atmosphere, these lachrymose lawmakers for several months have faced an increasingly hysterical onslaught from constituents demanding the death of the "amnesty" for immigrants that they hear vilified daily on talk radio."

Let's fix that sentence....

In such an atmosphere, these spineless, money-hungry, sellout-to-illegal-labor lawmakers for several months have faced an increasingly hostile and angry onslaught from Americans demanding that the law be enforced and that foreign lawbreakers not be given preferences and special treatement after these Americans heard the truth of the details of this bill on talk radio, the only source of info keeping the public informed.

Bob Novak is clueless on this issue, as is virtually every pundit inside the Beltway. It’s amazing how sheltered they are and blame this on “xenophobia” of Americans stirred up by talk radio. Obviously, Bob doesn’t get out much and talk to real Americans who have been angry about the lack of border control for many years and angry about runaway illegal immigration. Is that so hard to understand? Talk radio only reflected the dismay that was already there among the VAST majority of the public. Novak should buy a clue.

I asked one of the few conservative Republican senators who stuck
with President Bush on immigration to assess how Senate Republican
Leader Mitch McConnell handled the issue.
Asking not to be quoted by name he replied:

Cluck, cluck, cluck!!!
That's one courageous supporter of "comprehensive immigration
reform" right there!
