I asked one of the few conservative Republican senators who stuck with President Bush on immigration to assess how Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell handled the issue. Asking not to be quoted by name, he replied: "If this were a war, Sen. McConnell should be relieved of command for dereliction of duty." Not only did the minority leader end up voting against an immigration bill that he said was better than the 2006 version that he supported, but he also abandoned his post, keeping off the floor during final stages of Senate debate.

It's the damn Curse of the Hyphenates------ they bring their corrupt cultures to the US then demand our pandering legislators enshrine it into law so that the rest of us are forced to live by their frickin' rules.

This issue is not going away. It is the elephant in the room and growing larger every day. No matter how much spin the politicians use to disguise what is happening, it boils down to whom do you believe, the politicians or your own lying eyes? Grassroots organizations are springing up all over the country. They are committed to taking their government back from the political elites of both parties. States like AZ, OK, and GA have passed legislation cracking down on the benefits given to illegals. Local communities like Hazelton, Herndon, Farmers Market, etc. are also taking action.
According to census figures, there are now 38 million foreign born residents of the US with 12 million illegal. Those numbers are probably understated. It has been more than 80 years since the foreign born population of the US has reached such a percentage [over 12% or about one in every eight residents of this country] and in several years it will exceed that number making it the highest in our history. And in terms of raw numbers, there are almost three times the number of immigrants than we had during the Great Wave in 1910. There is going to be a major backlash from the American people and the the Reps better make sure that they are on the right side of the issue. God help us when we have an economic downturn.

You left out Teddy Kennedy, Salazar, and Menendez. And who are the faces associated with defeating this bill: Sessions, Vitter, DeMint, Coburn, and Cornyn. Add to that "Right-wing" talk radio. The fact is that this was a victory for Conservatives and the people.
Notice that even John McCain avoided any connection with this resurrected bill. He didn't even vote on many of the amendments. And I didn't see him in one photo op during the resurrected round.
But check his votes. McCain can't disassociate himself from this issue. He was one of the grand bargainers.
What the casual citizen knows is this: The Republicans pushed this bill to legalize millions, and the Democratic Senate defeated it -- twice. George W (Republican) put his face on it with that evening nationwide comprehensive immigration speech early last year, and his "I now have a Congress I can work with" comment the morning after the 2006 election defeats, and his "I'll see you at the bill signing."
I think you underestimate the "casual citizen." The Dems wanted to put a Rep face on this issue, but anyone watching Kennedy and Reid's performance just before the final vote, understands that this was really a Dem bill. How can Novak and Hispanic groups blame the Reps for defeating this bill yet say it was a Rep bill?
I would say that is true, but it was because he had his little closed door meeting with reed and agreed to bring a dead bill back under rules, that limited debate and that were contrived to bypass the will of the people.

I though Invaders marching in the streets brought it to the forefront.
Until we have security and some semblance of border control, most Americans will not support any benefits, amnesty, or whatever you want to do to help the illegal immigrant. This is the basic problem with your philosophy and those who supported the legislation. Security first. Then we will listen to other changes.
You need to impress upon us that you care more about us then you do illegal immigrants. And some of us have relatives waiting years to get in and the people you support can walk across tonight. THEY MUST GET IN LINE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!
Here is my proposal. Feel free to run with it.
1. Do the job you swore to do. Enforce the current laws. Support and reinforce the officers working the border. Support a federal law directing local police and other law enforcement to take action to detain and initiate deportation of those here illegally. Jail employers of illegal immigrants.
2. No benefits for those in the country illegally. Exception, those with true emergency medical conditions will receive treatment while their deportation is initiated.
3. Initiate a constitutional amendment to stop the anchor baby phenomenon.
4. Build the fence.
5. Change the immigration quotas to reflect real needs justified by industry and/or states. Make the justifications public. So the average American knows how many we are allowing in and why. We will support something logical, fair, and needed AFTER our security is taken care of.

We will agree to disagree. The conservative Reps are getting the credit for stopping it along with "eviiiiiil Talk Show Hosts." One correction: "eviiiiiil, Right-wing Talk Show Hosts, along with nativists, bigots, racists and xenophobes.
Never mind that, last time I checked, “Hispanics” were counted as whites.
Actually, they come in all colors per the Bureau of the Census.

McConnell added: "It wasn't the people's will. And they were heard." He was blaming Republican failure on his fellow citizens, which seldom works in politics.
No, Mitch, the failure is with a leaderless, RINO infested GOP Senate contingent that has lost track of its constituency. You've put yourselves above those who voted you into office. The fall will be critical to your incumbency.
Well novak has on foot in the grave and the other on a banana peal. The man has spent his whole life talking. I wonder if he has ever done anything enjoyable. People like him thinks the world will end if they retire.

You ascribe too much power to Hillary. This issue has been percolating for much longer among the American people. Tancredo was the first politician to really talk about it in the public square. But organizations like FAIR, NumbersUSA [Roy Beck's outfit], ANCIR, and others have been talking and lobbying about this issue for a decade or longer. I remember one political pollster saying that the issue of immigration has been ranked high by opinion polls but ignored by both political parties until it has now reached a boiling point. You can only spin reality so far.
When and how did Hillary bring this issue up? What was her position on it? Did she propose legislation? I do know that Hillary, Kennedy, Jim Moran, and other Dems addressed the first marches in the street by the illegals, which acutally proved to be a PR disaster for the illegals and woke up the American people on how large the invasion really was.

I keep wondering why WE have to foot the billion dollar bill for border security. WE are a superpower---we should demand Mehico do something about this.
Keep in mind that the US (that's us, the taxpayers) provides the nuclear defense umbrella to protect Mexico, so that Mehico has no real defense expenses. America needs to let Mexico know that we will cut off every penny in aid it gets from the United States unless they do something about border security.
Mexico can well-afford it. Mexico is a wealthy oil-producing neighbor. Mexico has more "Forbes" billionaires, 11, than all but eight other nations. It has more billionaires than Saudi Arabia, Switzerland or Taiwan. It also has more than 85,000 millionaires. According to a CNN report, Mexico sits on oil reserves worth about $400 billion, but Mexico's state-owned oil company, Pemex, doesn't have the investment funds to tap those reserves, and Mexico's Congress refuses to allow foreign investment in Pemex. Some observers say this is due to Mexican gov't corruption, and the obsession to line their own pockets. The government of Mexico---with all of its oil revenue----needs to be pitching in to protect the borders (AND taking care of its own people, not "outsourcing' them as wards of American taxpayers).
(2) Adding insult to injury American taxpayers are subsidizing foreign transfers to Mexico. America should mandate proof for all cash transfers out of the US and/or force all transferring agencies -- banks, credit unions, Amex, Western Union to collect a substantial withholding tax -- 50%, say -- on every unexplained foreign remittance. (The percentage Mehican politicans are getting from this $20-30 billion bundle must be considerable or else it would be stopped).
