Hispanic voters could make GOP pay for defeat of immigration legislation

With the Senate immigration bill dead and buried, political activists say their next battle will be at the ballot box, where Republicans risk losing hard-earned votes among Hispanic immigrants.

Lawmakers dealt a lethal blow to the immigration bill Thursday, making it highly unlikely Congress will enact any broad changes in immigration law until well after the presidential election in 2008. As policy analysts study the fallout, some say the defeat could prompt immigrants — the nation's fastest growing group of new voters — to swing toward Democratic candidates.

Democrats could gain more Hispanic voters, who make up the nation's largest and fastest growing minority. Except for Cuban-Americans, the nation's Hispanics traditionally have voted for Democrats, but many were swayed toward President Bush in 2004, when he received a landmark 40 percent of the Hispanic vote.

With the immigration bill's collapse, Republicans could lose such gains, experts said.

"Gains"? WHAT gains? Losing elections by over a twenty percent margin?

The idea that illegal aliens would vote GOP or their children would out of gratitude for getting legal status has been conclusively debunked. What the GOP should do is pursue an immigration policy that will serve the nation's highest interests, not out of a craven political calculation designed to win Hispanic votes in the future.

"to swing toward Democratic candidates."

I guess if they keep saying it might become true but by my count 15 dims voted against the legislation.

In fact if they hadn't it's doubtful it could have been stopped.

Hispanics who are here LEGALLY will support the GOP.

Sorry to seem so rude about it, but they're the only Hispanic voters I give a damn about.

Yes. Those illegal aliens (criminals) will be voting early and often for the Dims. Of course, they would vote for the Dims regardless of what the GOP did or did not do on scamnesty.

This is the "secure borders" proponents are anti-Hispanic racists. The MSM likes to foster a perception so laughable it isn't even true.

Bush should have never opened up this can of worms, the status quo was just fine.

It should come as no surprise to anyone other than a moron that regardless of the facts, the GOP will be blamed for killing this legislation.

The GOP will lose votes in Fl and Texas.

Maybe enough to put Hillary and Obama in the WH.

A President hasn't done anything this stupid since Clinton decided we needed more gays in the military.

The largest and fastest growing UNION is SEIU and they are chock full of “immigrant” janitors, housekeepers and healthcare workers, and have been pouring million$ in to the DNC.

Oh how nice it would be to assimilate 12-20 million dues paying members!

I would have to agree.

It would seem hard to believe that people that went to the trouble of getting here legally would punish those who don’t want others cutting in line and breaking the law they honored to get here.

Agreed. Just why would we want to enshrine law-breaking as a practice into American law? These people are not even required to earn forgiveness. Instead, its just handed out to them like candy. So I don't see how unilateral amnesty either benefits the alien in question or the country. That goes against every conservative principle. Its shocking to find Republicans even flirting with it. They would never buy it for domestic criminals. Therefore, why should illegal aliens be treated any differently?

What a shocker! The Hispanics who weren’t going to vote Republican anyway aren’t going to vote Republican.

You are deluding yourself to think that the Republican nominee for President is going to lose Texas and Florida. In the current political map, it is impossible for him to lose Texas and it is almost impossible for him to lose Florida.

the nation’s Hispanics traditionally have voted for Democrats

Voting Democrat is only going to get them higher tax rates and less opportunity,
you can fool some of the Hispanics, some of the time,
but not all the Hispanics, all the time.

What you said!

It is a complete pipe-dream to think that people who support amnesty for illegal aliens would ever vote Republican.

It is obvious to me that the Liberals understand this implicitly, but even a blind, dumb fool can see that this is a wedge issue for conservatives, and they have (and will) do absolutely EVERYTHING in their power to keep this issue front and center up until election day.
