PHONE-CALL MUTINY; HOW CITIZENS FELLED THE BORDER BILL (gov't OF, BY and FOR the people prevailed)
NY POST ^ | June 30, 2007 | RICH LOWERY

Posted on 06/30/2007 5:23:48 AM PDT by Liz

BEWARE of an aroused citizenry. It's an admonition that should be ingrained in the brain of any run-of-the-mill politician, let alone someone who has ascended to the United States Senate. But from the Olympian heights of the world's greatest deliberative body, it is often forgotten. So senators got a reminder in the humiliating defeat of a "comprehensive" immigration bill that had the support of the president of the United States, a bipartisan group of senators with the blessing of the leaders of their caucuses and the support of the editorial boards of the country's most important newspapers.

Having Specter is like having a second sphincter.

Good article by Lowry. Straight-forward and honest. Senators have placed themselves apart from and above the people for too long. They are not happy that they are being scrutinized now.

Lowry’s last sentence sums it up.

“There is really no such thing as an “inside game” anymore, since bloggers make sure it gets “outside.” Both the right and the left will take advantage of this, for good and ill policy ends. But it’s clearly an enhancement of democracy. Senators should get used to it, and buy more phone lines.”

.........it is a wonderous thing that the People of the US have spoken clearly and that the People were able to save the nation.............

The demise of amnesty means government OF, BY and FOR the people prevailed.

This is a victory for Democracy.

All is well in the Republic.

The Framers would be proud.

Mutiny is the wrong choice of words, rebellion is the correct word for this situation I believe and we did rebel. I called numerous times, sometimes I got through and somethimes I didn’t but once again I thank God for the internet and talk radio or they would have rolled over us. I’m proud to say, even though I’m a conservative, my two Democratic Senators here in Montana Baucus and Tester voted against the bill both times.

Lou Dobbs deserves a healthy measure of praise for his work in killing the amnesty bull.
How CNN can keep him on after he refused to drink the amnesty Kool Aid is open to question.
You know it was a bad bill when a host on CNN is helping to drive a stake through its heart.

Thanks.

If you ask me, I think the atrocity of Mexicans taking to the streets waving Mexican flags alerted Americans to the dangers to our democracy of these hyphenates taking over our government.

It’s to bad our leaders in the Congress-—under oath to protect and defend the US-—chose to ignore these dangers.

The things that will be remembered forever in my own mind is hearing Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC) telling the opponents to “Shut up!”, Senators Trent Lott (R-MS) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) blaming talk radio and threatening to reintroduce the Fairness Doctrine, and of course Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA)
telling the Senate that “We don’t know what the people think.”

I can’t think of a single other issue, in all the years I have been following politics, where the rank and file members of both sides have been so adamantly against something that their leadership wanted.

Democrat fatcats saw a huge influx of underclass (that would could be reliably expected to vote their way), Republican fatcats saw millions of chicken-pluckers and landscape gardeners (that could be reliably expected to work for cheap wages) — and both sets of fatcats knew full well that their base voter were completely against it.

And so, they tried to sneak-slam it through. This time, however, they got caught. Bush got both eyes blackened, the Senate got a harsh lesson in humility and the house got the total bejeezus scared out of them.

About time they remembered that they work for us — not the other way around.

It will be interesting to see how many major raids for illegals HSD/ICE makes during the coming week (and weeks), now that they don’t need the headlines.

If these Horse’s rumps had just told the truth, explaining in detail why they did what they did, people might disagree but remain generally supportive of their Government.

This business of ramming through bills, unread, poorly understood, inattentive to the greater consequences of their actions, stuffing amendments with yum-yums to salve the public, instead of focusing on the Engine of our Republic, just makes my blood boil.

It just makes you want to alter The Constitution to

FORBID INCUMBANCY RE-ELECTION

You have got that one right on.

It will take duck tape, a chair, and Jack Bauer with a gun pointed at their knee caps to keep this shady bunch from sneaking this through behind our backs.

Don’t get caught up in the glory of winning just one battle in the war. The demons are regrouping as we speak.
