The people killed amnesty (Comprehensive Invasion Reform and Amnesty Act of 2007 -- DEAD, FINALLY!)

The justifiably furious reaction of the American public, which deluged senators with telephone calls, e-mails and faxes, forced the Senate to reverse itself yesterday and send the amnesty bill crashing to defeat — a potentially fatal blow. It was a devastating setback for the Bush administration and its Democratic Party allies, in particular Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Sen. Ted Kennedy.

In addition to being an extraordinary substantive triumph for the American people, it was a huge victory for the conservative movement. Talkers such as Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, Laura Ingraham and many others played an indispensable role in making available the research by the Heritage Foundation and NumbersUSA and analysis from editorial pages such as this one to tens of millions of Americans in a very short period of time. But ironically, by demonstrating in a powerful way its ability to reach and educate the public about the specific problems with the bill, talk radio has also made liberal politicians like Sen. Dianne Feinstein even more determined to revive the so-called Fairness Doctrine (the equal-time policy enforced by the Federal Communications Commission until it was eliminated in 1987 at the urging of President Reagan) in an effort to take away the one part of the mass media that conservatives dominate. On the final vote, virtually the entire conservative movement lined up against the bill. On the losing side were the leading Democratic presidential contenders — Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama — and the Bush administration, vividly demonstrating the political gap between the president and the conservative movement.

Barring a cataclysmic even (like a major war with Iran), President Bush will never again receive support from the majority of conservatives.

Many Republicans are finished with him.

The political ledge dive by the GW Bush is almost to immense to describe. I don't know if there is anything in US history to compare it to, except perhaps Johnson's loss of the Democratic base during 1968. But even that was different, in that radicals finally took control the entire Democracrat party after years of posturing for it.

President Bush's next 17 months are going to be very lonely for him indeed. I feel sorry for him, but he did this to himself.

The people killed comprehensive amnesty and it was a great victory. Now it’s time to make sure they don’t get non-comprehensive amnesty piece by piece, things like the DREAM bill. And it’s time for the the border wall, enforcement and deportation of illegals. It’s time to make the representatives of the people jump to the people’s tune.

Don’t know that outmaneuvered is the term to use. I believe it was outright rebellion by the American people. They are mad as hell and aren’t going to take it any longer. The public opinion of congress is in the toilet. The senatorial azzhats gave shown themselves for what they are. To paraphrase that great political scientist, Machiavelli, you INCREASE your political power by USING your political power. Controlling the borders has just become the number one issue for the 2008 primaries and elections. Conservatives NEED such an issue to get them to the polls.

Agreed. Now is the time to tell them to seal our borders. If we could get the same reaction from the voters to do that as we did to defeat the amnesty bill, we would have accomplished a great deal.

Thank you for mentioning the GOOD that W has done. I still do not understand why he wuld support this bill. He has always wanted some kind of immigration reform, but why this? Even Rush wondered what was behind it.

He hasn't gone so far that rational conservatives will write him off IF he sees that the people simply are not with the Democrats.

I think there may be some conservatives on this board who are NOT rational. W is now evil incarnate, and so is anyone who does not agree with them 100% of the time.

"Change" was voted in in November, but look at Congress' numbers--people don't like this particular change.

Some of these 100%ers may think they can stay home next year. If they don't like THIS Congress, wait til there is a dim pres to go along with it.

Phone calls, e-mails, etc, can make a difference. Oppose the rinos in the primaries, not in the general. If you don't like what your local/state GOP offers, speak up. Find someone to run against the rinos. That shouldd be done NOW, not later.

We can also do our part by not purchasing goods and services from businesses that use illegals. Stipulate “no illegals” for your home construction or remodeling projects, lawncare, house cleaning, whatever. As long as we feed this monster with our dollars we are contributing to the problem.

I think W needs to do a lot of work to win back conservatives, but he can do it. I also think a lot of conservatives need to remember who the real problem is in this country--of course, having a "conservative" president who doesn't act accordingly is a bad thing, but look at the alternatives on the other side of the aisle. The dems are nuttier than ever.
