Coburn (OK) Vows To Try To Stop Immigration Bill

Washington, DC (AP) - U-S Senator Tom Coburn says he'll try to kill an immigration bill that was revived in the U-S Senate.

Senators voted 64-to-35 to revive the bill with 60 votes needed.

Both Coburn and Senator Jim Inhofe voted against it. Coburn said later he'll do everything he can to make sure the bill never gets out of the Senate.

Opponents say the bill gives amnesty to illegal immigrants and Coburn says it undermines the rule of law.

The bill is supported by President Bush who is working to drum up support for it.

When I moved from kommiefornia about two years ago, I was so disgusted with the president and the Republican party that I determined to never vote again.

But here in OK, Coburn and Inhofe are working to do the right thing. I will work to help these two patriots.

Use common-sense immigration reform
Submitted by GOPLawson on June 25, 2007 - 9:45am. Tags: general
From My Letter to the Editor in the Columbus Dispatch-

The collapse of the recent immigration-reform bill in the U.S. Senate represents an opportunity to get reform right. Immigrants have helped America become the truly great nation that it is. If we decide to simply slam the door shut, we are slamming the door on the future.

That said, we are a nation of laws and as Theodore Roosevelt said, “Obedience of the law is demanded; not asked as a favor.” Whenever laws are broken, we cheapen the very foundation of an orderly society. Consequently, blanket amnesty is a mistake.

If we are going to be more open, we must do it in a way that makes sense and is not subordinated to mindless political correctness. We need to employ all of the best technology at our fingertips to keep people from illegally crossing our borders. Also, we must ensure that all new immigrants become, once again in Roosevelt’s formulation, “an American, and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here.”

GREG R. LAWSON

The Dispatch edited out the last line of my submission- “This means assimilation, pure and simple, no matter the arguments against.”

I was under the impression that any senator can stall a vote by invoking a “hold”. If so, why all the drama? Why not a rolling group of holds placed by all the Republicans who still care about representative government.

Just called Senator Coburn’s office to offer thanks for all the good work. I think they appreciated the call.

Bond told Hannity he wanted the amendments to have a chance to be heard, including his, but that he will vote NO on cloture tomorrow unless his amendment passes. (It didnt).

So what Bond is saying is Amnesty is OK as long as he gets to trim a little off the top. This is simply mush from a guy who has been in DC too long.

I love our two Senators. Reminder to all that Sen Inhofe is up for reelection in 2008 and the WH will most likely try to cut off funding for his campaign. Oklahomans will do what we did for Dr. Coburn and make sure Sen Inhofe gets reelected without help from the WH!

Actually, he was very critical of the bill and IIRC talked about the need to kill it. You can hear him yourself.

He had a chance to kill it in the cloture motion. If he had set aside his self aggrandizing "amendment" and coaxed a few fellow Republicans to follow, (by displaying some leadership) this bill would be history. But he didn't.
I've heard all I need to.

Is it just possible that Republicans voted yesterday for Cloture just so that when the RATS shoot down their proposals they can go in front of the camera?

Nevermind....

I moved here from CT. First time in my life I got to feel proud voting for someone (Coburn in the primary). If I was still in CT, I would resign from the party. In the last year or so, Inhofe is really stepping up to the plate, too.

Me too. Not sure his health is good enough though.

I just wish Tom Coburn ran for President!

I called Inhofe's office to thank him for the common sense immigration bill he introduced and asked if there was any chance he'd run for POTUS. The lady said no.
