Chris Matthews bushwacks Ann Coulter by setting up a call from Elizabeth Edwards during his full hour with Coulter on Hardball last night.

Video Here

Mrs. Edwards gets owned by Ann Coulter when it is brought up the sleezy tactics that Edwards (A Democrat candidate for President of the United States of America) has used in his profession as an Attorney that exploits doctors and children for his own enrichment.

That’s just a pat, anti-Coulter remark. She’s a little skinny for my taste, and I’ve probably knocked her for it, then again, I wish I had that problem. There’s less petty things to knock her for.

Ann's the one being tasteless. She never establishes that Edwards is using his son's death for political advantage. Maybe he is, but she doesn't come anywhere near proving it.

This isn't a court of law. But she does present some facts.

Edwards has talked about his son's death in a 1996 car accident on "Good Morning America," in dozens of profiles and in his new book. ("It was and is the most important fact of my life.") His 1998 Senate campaign ads featured film footage of Edwards at a learning lab he founded in honor of his son, titled "The Wade Edwards Learning Lab." He wears his son's Outward Bound pin on his suit lapel. He was going to wear it on his sleeve, until someone suggested that might be a little too "on the nose."

If you want points for not using your son's death politically, don't you have to take down all those "Ask me about my son's death in a horrific car accident" bumper stickers? Edwards is like a politician who keeps announcing that he will not use his opponent's criminal record for partisan political advantage. (I absolutely refuse to mention the name of my dearly beloved and recently departed son killed horribly in a car accident, which affected me deeply, to score cheap political points.

I wouldn't want John Edwards to be president, but I think even Karl Rove would be willing to stipulate that the death of a son is a terrible thing.

Howard Dean talks about his brother Charlie's murder at the hands of North Vietnamese communists. Bizarrely, after working on the failed George McGovern campaign, Charlie Dean went to Indochina in 1974 to witness the ravages of the war he had opposed. Not long after he arrived, the apparently ungrateful communists captured and killed him.

She just says so. In my view, there's nothing wrong with talking about the death of your son. Maybe Edwards was being opportunistic, but without solid prove, it's out of line to say so.

Nonsense. Ann is a political commentator/humorist. Muzzling her based of your subjective view of "taste" is not the way a free press is supposed to work. Let the public decide. Hell, Lincoln was chided by the press for his "simian" appearance. We have McCain-Feingold and now a movement to reinstitute the fairness doctrine, both of which are meant to limit and control political speech. And yet we have the WH and its Open border supporters calling us bigots, xenophobes, nativists, and not having the best interests of America in mind.

The politicians can call us names but we can't respond back because it is "tasteless." What they are doing goes far beyond tasteless. What the hell is happening to this country?

He [Chris Matthews] had it coming, he'd been bullying all his guests for years.

Oh, the humiliation, to have his big bubble of conceit popped by a mere woman, and a beautiful blonde at that. /sarc

It's like saying Wile E. Coyote tried to sandbag the Roadrunner.

You know, that pretty much describes it.

Elmer Fudd trying to sandbag Bugs might be better, since Chris sorta looks like Elmer.

Here's a breakdown of what happened: Matthews, Coulter, and Edwards stage a mutually beneficial dustup that delivers ratings for Chrissy, attention for Ann, and sympathy for Edwards. Those who like Ann still like Ann. Those who hate Ann still hate Ann. And tomorrow Matthews ratings will be back in the sewer. End of story.

And those that weren't aware may actually find out something new. Some people will learn that edwards has a son. They will learn that son has died. They may even learn that edwards has commented on not commenting on his dead son. Some people will learn that Ann Coulter wrote a book wherein she mentions bill clinton raping Juanita Broderick. Some people may not be aware of this and will want to know more.

Do you have proof Ann was in on this?? If not that’s a pretty serious charge. Of course your pulling this out of your ear.

How can this be beneficial for Ann?? She doesn’t need this at all. Did you see her fan club, why does she need or would ever do these cheap theatrics. Not to mention you could tell how perturbed she was. Your way off base.

My question would be, how involved was the Edwards campaign in this? Who called who and why didn’t Prettyboy debate Annie if he was so offended?? Was the Fag Spitboy’s first choice and had to settle for wifey? Because Johnnie couldn’t afford to pull this stunt and lose the debate too.

She says he wants points, but doesn't demonstrate that. Talking about the death of your son isn't automatically a cynical ploy. Even if we're talking about a shyster lawyer/politician's son, I'd need some proof. I haven't seen any proof. Is there supposed to be something wrong with rememberances? That's crazy.

Muzzling her based of your subjective view of "taste" is not the way a free press is supposed to work. Let the public decide.

Easy there, cowboy. Who said anything about muzzling? I'm not muzzling her. I'm a member of the public. You're supposed to let me decide for myself, right? Well I've decided. Her comments were tastless, petty, and unproven.

What the hell is happening to this country?

What's happening is that if you want to make it in show business, you have to be an over-the-top sensationalist to get above the din of all the others vying for the gig.

What the hell are you talking about? She took the gig. You think she expected Chrissy to play nice? How many times has she been on his show? She knows the drill. She gets attacked, she fights back, hopefully makes some headlines, everybody wins. It's a different setup on H/C, where she's among friends, but on Matthews' show she knows what's going on. I don't know if she specifically knew Edwards' was gonna call in. Wouldn't surprise me either way.

How can this be beneficial for Ann?? She doesn’t need this at all. Did you see her fan club, why does she need or would ever do these cheap theatrics. Not to mention you could tell how perturbed she was.

This is how she makes her living. She's professionally perturbed. She's purposefully combative...but you can't be combative without someone to combat with. That's why it's mutually beneficial.

True, but I have too much respect for Bugs to compare him to Ann. She's not in his league :-)

Great stuff. She Ann-handled chris and elizabeth. elizabeth was probably fuming after that phone call.

Beeotch shouldn't try to trade on her illness, and carry the water for her husband. Mrs. DU herself, she of the virulently anti Christian/Catholic bloggers that her (husband's) campaign employed (or still employs), she of the campaign that felt the need to call out VP Cheney's daughter as homosexual in two separate national debates, she of the campaign that claimed if John Kerry were President, people like Christopher Reeve would get out of his chair and walk again...(with all respect, that didn't work out too well, did it?)

But I have to give credit where it is due...the appearance of a conservative commentator got me, even for a brief moment, to suppress the rising bile in my throat and watch a program that has almost five times fewer viewers than the top rated show on FOX News (which isn't as rabidly right wing as people think).

We need more people like Ann Coulter, like Kristinn, like Rush and Mark Levin, who are smart and incisive, and are willing and able to go toe to toe with these leftists. "Thank me very much!"

"ask me about my dead son" alienates decent people

"Ask me about my dead son" ... this is a case of "the truth hurts," honey dear.

The Edwardses richly deserve the jibe. They use the dead son shamelessly. Just one example:

Back in 2004 campaign, the Edwardses left a couple hundred of their supporters sweltering in the hot summer sun, awaiting a scheduled campaign event. The Edwardses were hours late.

What was the hold-up? Why, the Edwardses had decided to make a "spontaneous" and "secret" and "private" visit to their son's grave -- without bothering to alert their gathered supporters of the change in schedule.

By being so ostentatiously late, the Edwardses doubtless knew that the media would be curious about the reason.

And shazamm, the media "found out" and fawningly reported the Edwards's "private visit to their dead son's grave."

Couldn't have been better scripted than that!

Aw she’s a comedienne, and very funny. The libs are SO touchy, like 3rd graders whining about someone who ‘said something mean.’

So you think if she goes on a talkshow run by a lib, anything goes. Wrong, when you are on a book tour and book some loser’s show you should expect to talk about your book.

Your dislike of Ann is fine and if you do not understand Invective Humor that is your problem. Most of us realize that every one of her jokes has a foundation of truth which is what makes her lines funny.

Libs hate to be laughed at which is what peels away their facade of moral superiority and exposes their hatred. Lizzy Edwards cashing in on her Cancer politically is a perfect example. Ann Rox!

Give me a break. She provided some examples of how he injected his son's death into the campaign. Gore used his sister's death the same way. Ann is giving her perspective based on her observations. What kind of "proof" could ever meet your standard? A lie detector examination? These politiicians are shameless.

Easy there, cowboy. Who said anything about muzzling? I'm not muzzling her. I'm a member of the public. You're supposed to let me decide for myself, right? Well I've decided. Her comments were tastless, petty, and unproven.

No, we have become so politically correct wallowing in our multiculturalism and diversity that we can't speak truth to power. Anyone who does is labelled "tastless and petty." The emperor has no clothes.
