mvpel: The list price of the RAZR is around $400-$500, and they sold 50 million of 'em.
Good example from mvpel. At GoldHorde's link I read that Apple estimates sales of 10 million units in 18 months, out of 1.5 billion cell phones sold worldwide by all vendors. The Razr is pretty, I've read that it has a fragile hinge. I'm thinkin' that $5 billion dollars of Apple sales -- just in iPhones -- could be considered at least a moderate success.

I have a razor and hate the thing

Me too. I have two of them (I'm on the Verizon family plan) and like an idiot I bought into the hype. Both Razrs had to be sent back to the factory within two weeks of receiving them because they both had failed.

The replacements are working, although the tiny screen on the outside of my flip phone no longer displays anything - just a blue screen. In addition, I'm constantly having to wipe off the main screen because the design puts it right on your face when you talk and it gets smeared easily. Oh, and whatever you do, DON'T DROP THEM!

because of all the tools I see walking around with them

LOL!!! I'm with you. I haven't seen them much out here in Iowa, but at a recent conference in Denver I was struck by how many 'tools' were walking around w/these things. Self important ba$tards, I thought. Unless you're the POTUS, what the hell are you doin' that you need to have your friggin' head connected to a phone like that? (obviously I'm not from Iowa and the east coast girl comes out in the pressence of tools)

No IM, no walkie-talkie? Thank you, Apple.

My prediction, within a year, an iPhone mini. ;’)

This one is worth reading (for those who don’t like Dvorak).

I’m happier with AT&T/Cingular than I was with Verizon. I have only heard bad things about T-Mobile. I've been with T-Mobile for years and the coverage just keeps getting better. On top of that I think they have the best CS of any of the carriers. That said I have to say that it is an individual decision and alot depends on the coverage in our area. Kirby

“Thanks. I already pay close to $100 a month for my regular cell and do NOT want to pay much more!”

You won’t have to. The plans were just released. Looks like mobile type charges with UNLIMITED DATA.

There she blowsssssssssss, timberrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Damn, I wish I still had my Apple stock.

It stores pictures, plays/holds music and has access to the web?

Also TAKES pictures, plays/holds video, text and email along with web access via wifi and the slower EDGE system.

I grew up in a time of KLH’s, and Advents, and JBL’s, and Marantz’s, when things actually worked. Like phones. You could hear someone and they didn’t fade in and out.

Funny you should mention that. I restore old audio equipment on the side and some of my favorites to work on are Marantz. That and Dynaco and Heathkit tube equipment. Those were the days when things lasted more than a year and it wasn't considered disposable. I've got a 30 year old Marantz 4400 I restored that plays perfectly and everything works including the scope. Don't get me started on my tube equipment...

Man, the price on old equipment has gone up tremendously, thanks Ebay!

Yes, I have heard of problems with Verizon.

I will be using it around the country and in Europe mainly.

So I need something that will be easy to use abroad and I need it for my email as well.

What about a Blackberry?

I don’t care “who” John Dvorak is. I’ve visited his site and I have read and evaluated his work. He is a hack. The article stinks like sh*t on hot ice, and if I were a high school English teacher, I’d give such an essay below average marks. I’d give a college student a failing grade. I expect writers of professional magazines to excel at their craft. All a writer has is his opinions and his words. This guy has nothing to offer in the way of either.

Furthermore, I don’t care what you think of my opinions. I have them, I share them, and anyone who wants to can read, ignore, or criticize them. If you’d like to actually discuss his article, defend it, or comment on my specific observations, go right ahead. If you have something intelligent to offer, we might even have a good discussion.

His amateurish, trifling column reflects poorly on PC Magazine. It’s that simple.

And yes, I do have a blog.

can anyone confirm that apple used a “small hand” hand model to demonstrate the iphone to make it look bigger and easier to use.

Who would buy a $500 phone and pay $100 a month or more to feed it? And why?

iPhone Service Plans

"Apple and AT&T today announced service plans for iPhone, 4 days before its release in the US at 6pm local time on Friday, June 29. The plans are $59.99/mo for 450 minutes, $79.99 for 900 minutes, and $99.99 for 1350 minutes, and all include unlimited data, 200 SMS messages, rollover minutes, and unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling. Any other standard AT&T service plan may also be used. A two year service plan is required, with a $175 cancellation fee if terminated early. In addition, activations are done via iTunes, so only the hardware is purchased in the store. Interestingly, activation of a contract via iTunes is required to enable the iPod/syncing functionality of the phone as well. (It will remain to be seen whether there are workarounds for this for those who only want the iPod functionality of iPhone, and whether the iPhone is easily unlockable for those who wish to try it on alternate carriers, and so on.)"
