Many moons ago my buddy and I were driving down a lonely Colorado road and WHACK!!!! Out of nowhere we hit a deer. We pull over to assess the situation and the deer was deader than dead. We hadn't been pulled over 30 seconds when a truck pulls up behind us. "Hey! You guys want that?" Well, we were dumb college kids without the slightest idea how to clean and dress roadkill so we told him to go ahead and take it. "Mmm! I'm makin' sausage!" were his final words as he heaved the dead deer into his pickup bed and drove away.
Police around here dispatch on average two injured deer a day. I don’t know what kind of paperwork they have to fill out, but it probably isn’t too egregious. Our PD is a pretty cool and sensible bunch overall.
I just wish they’d make announcement on their vehicle PA system when they are going to do it. No telling how many times I grabbed a firearm to defend myself because I thought the neighborhood was under attack.
Did anybody read the story? The cop's judgment was that it was not a safe situation to fire. I don't know enough to question his judgment.

I read the story. The cop was too chicken and didn't want to do the paperwork.
If had shot the deer right away he could have used the two hours he stood there to do the paperwork.
I am having some trouble thinking of a situation that cannot be made safe to shoot a deer with a handgun.
Maybe if you hit it with a rubber raft and he landed inside the boat.
I heard about in one State with an overabundance of deer, and thus an open hunting season, somebody came up with a brilliant idea.
A lot of hunters shoot a deer, but either don’t want the meat or just want a steak or two, so abandon the carcass. Well, an organization that provided food for the poor set up a program, so that if they don’t want much of the carcass, they can make a cell phone call, and a refrigerated truck will pick it up. And if they want, they can still get their steak or two first.
This proved to be a godsend, as it provides a lot of good quality venison for the poor, really cutting a lot of this organization’s expenses, plus they made extra money by selling the hide, used for services to help the poor get out of poverty.
A big time win-win.
That’s ridiculous. We had an officer put one down about 2 doors down from us on a busy residential street. There’s no excuse for this behavior.
Nope.....my wife saw the TV interview with the woman who called him and was there and he told her he did not want to do the paperwork

did it once in front of a bunch of soccer moms with my 54 jaeger....they wept....some mexicans took the carcass
New Mexico has it’s advantages....dad born in Artesia.....my oldest kin is a nursing home in Santa Fe...

Years ago a friend of mine tackled an injured doe in the walled off construction median of I-40 in the Durham area and killed it with a Swiss Army knife. Gutted it, packed it full of ice and took it home in the back of his work truck.

I'm glad your friend's adventure had a happy ending, but that was an incredibly foolish thing to do. Deer have extremely strong legs and very sharp hooves. A good kick from that doe could have easily disemboweled him. There have been many hunters killed this way as a result of getting too close to deer they thought were dead.
Uh, wouldn’t that only apply if he TOLD someone he fired his weapon?

What a bunch of dumb bunnies, someone should have choked it and claimed the carcass.
It is not a problem of hunters wanting to abandon a carcass, it is that just a lot of people can’t haul a heavy-ass carcass two or more miles back to where their vehicle is located, and can’t drive to pick it up.
You have to admit that it is not an easy task to haul 130lbs of deer any great distance. Especially when you have your rifle and all your other gear with you.
This is not a responsibility issue. If by making a phone call, I could get some big guys to haul a carcass a long way for me and still get some prime cuts out of the deal, well heck.
