Years ago a friend of mine tackled an injured doe in the walled off construction median of I-40 in the Durham area and killed it with a Swiss Army knife. Gutted it, packed it full of ice and took it home in the back of his work truck.
I'm glad your friend's adventure had a happy ending, but that was an incredibly foolish thing to do. Deer have extremely strong legs and very sharp hooves. A good kick from that doe could have easily disemboweled him. There have been many hunters killed this way as a result of getting too close to deer they thought were dead.
