Cameron's bag raises a few eyebrows
Jun 23 04:33 AM US/Eastern
Actress Cameron Diaz appears to have committed a major fashion crime in Peru.
The voice of Princess Fiona in the animated Shrek films may have inadvertently offended Peruvians.
They suffered decades of violence from a Maoist guerrilla insurgency by touring there on Friday with a bag emblazoned with one of Mao Zedong's favourite political slogans.
While she explored the Inca city of Machu Picchu high in Peru's Andes, Diaz wore over her shoulder an olive green messenger bag emblazoned with a red star and the words 'Serve the People' printed in Chinese on the flap, perhaps Chinese Communist leader Mao's most famous political slogan.
While the bags are marketed as trendy fashion accessories in some world capitals, the phrase has particular resonance in Peru.
The Maoist Shining Path insurgency took Peru to the edge of chaos in the 1980s and early 1990s with a campaign of massacres, assassinations and bombings.
Nearly 70,000 people were killed during the insurgency.
A prominent Peruvian human rights activist said the star of There's Something About Mary should have been a little more aware of local sensitivities when picking her accessories.
"It alludes to a concept that did so much damage to Peru, that brought about so many victims," said Pablo Rojas about the bag's slogan.
"I don't think she should have used that bag where the followers of that ideology" did so much damage.
Well, perhaps spending time in a Maoist re-education camp is just what she needs to wake her up.
Well, God Bless her little misguided heart. rme
Too bad Cameron can’t spend some actual time living as a peon in some of her beloved utopian socialist societies.
North Korea would be a great place to start.
She, in her Hollywood ignorance, probably thought that since they are poor natives they MUST support the struggle against their ‘oppressors’, and just assumed the oppressors must be anyone who doesn’t support communism.
This does not surprise me. I actually “met” and spoke with her once (South Beach rocks!) , she is as dumb as you can imagine. Very shallow.
‘Serve the People’ - IT’S A COOK BOOK!!!!!!!!!!
I saw the same TV show :-)
cameron-diaz-ditz ———a dolt?
You are being kind!
I question the intelligence and morals of anyone who benefits so greatly from capitalism and pushes the cause of communism on everyone else.
I think the real question is, who is marketing Mao bags as trendy fashion accessories. Looks like the socialists are infiltrating the fashion world also.
Who is going to make a trendy bag with George Washingtons face on it saying, One Nation Under God?
“serve the people”
another superior, brilliant, all-knowing, hollywood type who offends just by being. she hasn’t the slightest idea of what she’s doing, “feels” that everything she does is cute, and hasn’t any idea what people have generally gone through to rid themselves of terror and tyranny. they think they’re brilliant, but prove themselves to be the ignorant, stupid dolts that they are by pushing socialism down everyone’s throat. (i wonder if she would have thought of herself as cute if she had had a picture of The Lord on her pocketbook with one of His parables. IMHO, she is one of the moneychangers of our day)
I want to cut the girl some slack, I want to believe that she is dumb and innocent as compared to the Paris Hiltons and Angelina Jolies who are just as dumb but anything but innocent.
It's in Hanzi (Chinese).
Would you know what it meant without someone translating it for you.
cannibals love the bag, however.
“It’s in Hanzi (Chinese).

Well, I’m offended by her wearing a bag with a communist red star on it, so I hope that counts for something even I can’t read Hanzi. Besides, it doesn’t matter if I can or can’t read Chinese script. What gives you the right to tell the Peruvians or anyone else for that matter that they can only be upset by words written in their own language?
She probably thinks Shining Path is an outdoor lighting company.
I don’t think Cameron Diaz is a communist, she probably has the bag because it’s an “in” thing like those stupid Che Gueverra shirts.
The silly thing about this is that if a Hollywood star had a Confederate flag purse they’d be accused of insensitivity but the commie symbol is “cool”.
