A new Gallup Poll will only reinforce those who claim that while the rich get richer most Americans don't feel they are sharing in the growth in our economy. The stock market may be climbing and the unemployment remains relatively low, but 7 in 10 Americans believe the economy is getting worse -- the most negative reading in nearly six years.

What are your property taxes? mine on 1/4 acre are over 7k, how much is car insurance? mine 2k per year with spotless records. Yes, we have 2 car payments on vehicles from 2003
after we drove our others into the ground, and of course a mortgage.
No, but I expect to next November.
True, my property taxes are only 2700 per year, but that’s because our house is only worth 105,000 (average 1970’s era mid-middle class bi-level). Are you just in a high property value area, or do you “need” more house than I have? Car insurance is about 900 per year, but without collision.
I live in probably one of the top 10 wealthiest counties
in the US, but hey, I was raised here before all the elites moved in and made it that way, and intend to make the sacrifice to raise my kids in a good town, with the best schools etc. . I have a very modest old 4 bedroom house that was built around 1890 in a beautiful town. I do all my own work on the house when need be, and I am keeping it to a minimum these days. I fully take responsibiliy for my situation, hindsight is 20/20. When I bought my house in 2001, I was getting a healthy bonus every year as well, and since 9/11, that has gone bye-bye. I have had great raises each year, but it still gets more difficult to save anything.
Ouch. Corrupt politicians, union thugs, and racial hucksters have helped to destroy a beautiful state. Your unemployment rate is about twice that of my state. There are solutions to that, but no one seems to want to hear them.
Sounds like you’ve got a bit of challenge, I guess. I live in an armpit, but I like my armpit. My wife and I have never cared to have good “stuff” like most people, so I guess we are outliers. I didn’t mean to be critical of you personally; I just disagree with your assessment of the economy. Good luck.
Yep.... that must be it. Things have been SO GOOD, for SO LONG.. that people just don't know what a "bad" economy is anymore....
Good grief man.... there are more than 1000 open engineer jobs in Houston alone. Here in Louisville, we struggle to find good people to replace the ones who keep leaving for "better jobs". This despite the fact that our average bonuses this year were ~ 25%. Just.... REALLY is a tough worker environment here.. (s)

They polled the same Americans that Jay Leno uses in his Man on the Street segments. You know, the bits where he will show some bimbo a picture of Abe Lincoln and ask if she can tell him who that is and will get a response like, "I think that's the actor that does those sleeping pill commercials."
I'm in sales... and, I would agree. It IS slowing down. But, only from a RED HOT pace. 'Slowing down' is actually a good thing at the moment... as, it will eventually lead to less inflation and perhaps, lower interest rates.

If inflation is decreasing you don’t lower interest rates. You raise interest rates if inflation is increasing. The slowing down of the economy will lead to greater unemployment. We go through economic cycles so there will be a recession eventually. I wonder who loses their jobs first, the illegals or American citizens?
Yes... they do. A slowing economy means less pressure on prices... the Fed's response to this is, typcially, a reduction in interest rates.
You raise interest rates to slow inflation.
My husband alone makes close to $100K/per year and I still have to work part time or full time to make ends meet. We have 4 children, and at one time all 4 in catholic school with monthly tuition payments of close to $700/month. Now, with only two it’s around $450/month but in two years we’ll have college tuition. I drive a car that is 13 years old and my husband drives one that is close to 10 years, so no car payments for the last 5-8 years. We;ve taken 2 family vacations in the close to 18 yrs. we’ve been married and each time it was because my parents basically paid for them. We live in a nice home, in a wonderful neighborhood and pay close to $10,000/yr for property taxes (and in my area, that’s low). North Jersey property taxes are even higher.
The economy is in excellent shape, despite how difficult it is for my family. My husband keeps telling me, if we lived in other states we’d be rich. If we lived where I grew up, we’d be considered wealthy.
I don’t even know what gas prices are nor do I care. I have to drive, just like I have to buy milk and other products so I don’t look at the price tag.
Our savings is non-existent and that’s really our fault. However, we don’t have huge credit card debt (I’m one of those women who doesn’t buy on credit and believe if I don’t have cash then I don’t need it, just like my mom taught me).
My parents grew up during the depression and I remember their horror stories well. This country is no where near the Great Depression and forgets just what it was like to be really poor. We have the richest poor in the world.
I’m not judging you. I know how difficult it is to live in this State but it’s not because the economy sucks.
I moved here because the area was better, the schools were better (which they aren’t anymore).
As for your autistic child, I do understand since one of mine was learning disabled and since we went to Catholic School the resources weren’t as available to her so we did the private tutoring thing for 7 years. She fortunately was declassified 3 years ago. Granted, autism is different but services, free services are available including meds.
We don’t rely on gov’t services, never did never will per what my parents taught me. We live above our means so to speak because we live in an affluent area in a single family home, our choice. We can’t furnish our house or fix everything, or provide our kids with everything they *want* but we provide them with everything they need, materialistically. They’re learning to work to earn income (the two teens).
I understand your frustation with the high taxes in NJ since I live here too. However, the economy is in fantastic shape.
