WASHINGTON, June 16 (UPI) -- Immigration reform being considered in Congress would give some young illegal aliens a chance to become U.S. citizens by serving in the military.

About 750,000 young people might be eligible under the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors or DREAM act, The Boston Globe reports. The bill would allow those who were under 16 when they arrived in the United States, have a high school diploma and meet some other qualifications, to get on track for citizenship as long as they serve at least two years.

they allowed it during the Vietnam war because

Dream Act.. 2003

Non citizens that are legal immigrants can now enlist in the US military in classifications below a commissioned officer. The Dream Act gives this opportunity to illegals with some restrictions such as:

Unlike last year's bill, DREAM 2003 sets up a two-stage process for applying for legal status. Immigrant students who have grown up in the U.S., graduated from high school here, and can demonstrate good moral character would initially qualify for "conditional lawful permanent resident" status, which would normally last for six years. During the conditional period, the immigrant would be required to go to college, join the military, or work a significant number of hours of community service. At the end of the conditional period, those who meet at least one of these requirements would be eligible for regular lawful permanent resident status.

The idea seems to be “The ends justify the means.” The cause of this unwise provision is our peoples pursuit of pleasure. It is easy to turn the hard tasks over to others. Therefore, our men increasingly avoid military service. Therefore, there is a shortage. Therefore, we need the aliens. Therefore, our armies, the institution with guns, will increasingly become composed of those not steeped in a long tradition of Americanism. Yep aliens in the military eventually up and bit the Romans.

I think they dont deserve to get citizenship when they break the law however that being said. If they want to be US citizens so bad ship them off to Iraq. The Irish did it when we became a country as one post said it was done in the 70’s. If they want to stay here so bad stick them in the military. I am sure the homeless can pick the produce I hear they need shelter and food.

Legal immigrants have always had the opportunity to join the military and that didn't change with Vietnam. I have no problem with that at all.

The new proposal is to allow illegal immigrants to join. I'm far from convinced that this is a good idea.

Sorry, I disagree here. This is an honorable way for a non-citizen to become a citizen - through service. There were many non-citizens in when I was on active duty. Learning to be part of a team, seeing citizenry solidity with your fellow soldiers from all over the country. I am heartily for it.

no wrong you have to have a green card to be eligible to join USA military if your a student F-1 or an J-1 artist your legal but you cannot join USA Military

I served in Vietnam with a Canadian who was in the U.S. on a green card and found himself drafted. However, I never heard of any illegals, US or RA, in the military back in the day...
