President Bush yesterday told Hispanics to step into the middle of the immigration debate and make sure senators who have been bombarded with calls from opponents also hear from those who support the bill.
"There's a lot of emotion on this issue, and it makes sense to have people from around the country come and sit down with members of Congress to talk rationally about the issue," he told those attending the Hispanic Prayer Breakfast in Washington yesterday.
He was speaking a day after the bill, which collapsed last week, was revived by the top Democrat and Republican in the Senate.
Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, agreed to put the bill back on the Senate's schedule next week, and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican, agreed to limit the number of amendments Republicans would offer.
But roadblocks are already popping up.
Sen. Jim DeMint, South Carolina Republican, said he will block any attempt to send the bill to an eventual House-Senate conference, complicating the usual path a bill takes to reach the president's desk.
"Ted Kennedy has sold us another bill of goods and I don't trust him to make even more changes...

I don’t know what President Bush is thinking.

“Welcome to the UN. It’s your world.”
That’s how I am taking it! I go back to 1994 when he ran for Governor against Ma Richards.
I am speechless too. I can not believe this man who is President of the United States has turned such a blind eye on his own country and people. How can he sleep at night and how can his wife stand him.
Wow, G.W.: For you, that's an impressive bit of strategic thinking. Too bad most of those Hispanics you're calling on for assistance can't speak English.
Still, it was a good plan for an illiterate, racist, self-serving, worthless piece of excrement.
“All six are applying for citizenship. They didnt sneak across the border...”
Yep.
People who are up front and do things LEGALLY are good people, in my book.
hell, i am hispanic, and i am really against illegals, i came to this country legally and until now, i have been a supporter of President Bush, on the war against terror, but i am deeply saddened of what he is doing to our country, we need to call our congress and let them know what we think, as americans, as patriots.
Mexican by birth,,, but AMERICAN BY CHOICE
My only solution for now is snail mail, e-mail, calls and stopping all donations of my time and money to the polidiots behind this BS.
Hope yer well Cindy !
Stay safe !
Mexicans are citizens of Mexico, not the United States.
The Mexicans are just like the Palestinians. You dont hear what I do in Spanish (or maybe you do). Yo habla Espaniol mui, mui buen... (I dont write it well.)
You also didnt notice the Mexicans chanting Osama during a soccer match with the USA??? Or how about all those carrying signs that glorified Bin Laden during those protests last spring?
We have open warfare in the streets with Mexican gangs.
Mexico has never been and never will be a friend of the USA. They even oppose our war efforts to this day.
Screw Mexico...
“Stay safe!”
Thank you Squantos.
I always appreciate the power of prayer.
But that doesn’t answer my question. And to take things further, I was born here and freedom is paramount in my mind. Allowing people to break our laws and screw us by way of political hacks does not bode well for anyone.
No, no, no. You must be wrong. All of the pro-amnesty bigots will tell you that Hispanics are monolithic. They have no mind of their own. They're all the same. They all think alike, are all patriotic, all LOVE America. You know, just harmless, mindless, Mexicans.
George Bush’s grade for his presidency: D
George Bush’s grade for his 2nd term: F
If his 2nd term “F” gets any lower, he’s going to get an overall “F” from me.
Thank you for your service for our country, Proud US Vet.
I agree .. my Hispanic family members are totally against this amnesty. They’ve been legal for years and they feel this is very bad policy.
Really? I said that?
If that is true THEN YOU POST THE QUOTE FROM ME saying so.
You CAN'T because I NEVER said such a thing.
How could you be so stupid as to post a claim like this you can't back up?
Thank-you caballero...
You are correct — more slaps in the face then one. I know I keep saying I cannot believe what is happening or how hard they are pushing this Immigration bill but to this Oklahoman whose state just passed the toughest immigration law in the Country, I am fast getting past the ‘I cannot believe’ stage to being flat out disgusted with this President and anyone that supports this Immigration bill.
Anyone that stands with the President on this bill, I will never support nor will I support a candidate that has anything to do with anyone surrounding Bush that is pushing this bill or has pushed the bill in the past. My money and time will go direct to candidates up for reelection that vote against this bill.
Mexicans are citizens of Mexico, not the United States.
I didn't say "Mexicans" I said Hispanics.
When you comprehend my post get back to me "Sir".
Bush calls the Minutemen vigilantes for doing his job for him.
Many of his mouthpieces....some of whom are Hispanic call opposition xenophobes, racist, haters, and bigots (sounds like some here lol) and Chertoff even says we want illegals executed.
And then Bush goes directly to Hispanics and incites them to be more vocal and active to get this bill through.’
He is pandering to Hispanics plain and simple.
Why is it ok for Hispanics to look out for what Bush and their leaders see as “their issue” based on their group identification.
But folks who oppose that ...many of whom are not Hispanic....and do not want to live in an Hispanic nation.are racist?
Has Bush never read the differences in history between the US and Latin America. Has it not dawned on him why latin America lags so?
Does he suggest we take in anyone in the world who wants to come and work for 5 dollars and hour and get state assistance?
Are Hispanics who oppose illegals racist too?
I am starting to wonder if Bush really is better then Gore or Kerry would have been on this particular issue. I have my doubts.
It is hypocritical and naive.
The naivete is scary.....
