SAN DIEGO - Wayne Albert Bleyle confessed to molesting "countless" young, brain-damaged children under his care at the hospital where he worked for 25 years, prosecutors say.
On Tuesday, 15 months after his confession, the former respiratory therapist pleaded guilty to abusing four patients - a boy and three girls, including a 2-year-old toddler.
The plea leaves unanswered how many disabled children he preyed upon. Bleyle, 55, treated 176 patients during the 10 years of his career at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego.
Bleyle told investigators he could only remember the names of four children, prosecutors said, hampering efforts to identify more victims.
"We will never know how many victims there were in this case," said Deputy District Attorney Laura Gunn.
Bleyle was arrested after investigators found tens of thousands of pornographic images on his computer, including photographs he took of himself abusing his victims.
Some of them were comatose, and two of the four identified children have since died, according to Gunn.
Under a plea agreement, Bleyle admitted to eight counts of forcible lewd acts upon a child and four counts of exhibiting a minor in pornography - a dramatic reduction from the total 33 pornography counts originally charged.
Bleyle agreed to a sentence of 45 years and eight months, and was ordered by Superior Court Judge Kenneth K. So to serve at least 85 percent of the time in prison, even with credit for good behavior. He could have been sentenced up to 165 years if he had been convicted on all counts in a jury trial.
Prosecutors said they made a deal in part because they were anxious to spare one of Bleyle's victims. "He'll be 95 before he even sees a parole officer," Gunn said.
When So asked Bleyle, who has been jailed since his arrest how he pleaded, Bleyle replied, "Guilty, your honor."

My late husband, a VN vet, became a licensed practical nurse when he returned from the war. We didn't talk about it much; maybe he just wanted to help people. Eventually he left the profession. I think he was a sensitive person who took his patients to heart and didn't know how to make a separation betweeen work and personal life.
At some point trust has to be established...with cameras positioned everywhere..and someone monitoring them of course.
Is that true for male patients being examined by male doctors?
You are aware of course that female patients have and do still falsely accuse their male doctors of improper touching etc?
Male nurses, rad techs, respiratory therapists, whatever. Some of them are downright creepy.

No, it doesn’t mean that at all. It doesn’t mean they knew him, investigated him, or even knew he was in the room. It doesn’t mean that all male nurses are sexual predators. It doesn’t mean that you should avoid getting to know about the men and women who spend time alone with your children, and just arbitrarily eliminate the men. It doesn’t mean that you should deprive your children of medical attention unless and until all men have been forced out of the medical profession.
You need to learn about cause and effect, if it’s not too late for you. And it would probably be a good idea to see a therapist about your fixation.
BTW, I recommend you select a therapist based on qualifications, instead of gender. No sense doing even more damage.
I did not say I could recognize them. You said you could recognize them by their gender. I said you should do your homework, and find out about them. How you got “I can recognize them” out of that is beyond me.

I've never heard of females doing as much sexual damage to others as men. That's quite a slam against the nursing profession.
I have a 22 year old special needs daughter. She has a hard time putting thoughts and words together. Communicating. I’m a stay at home dad and my wife works. I’m with her all day on the weekdays. As for the monster doctor going to prison,that’s to good for him. He needs a bullet behind the ear. Good riddance to bad rubbish. These poor kids have it bad enough and they had to deal with Satan in scrubs.
