SAN DIEGO - Wayne Albert Bleyle confessed to molesting "countless" young, brain-damaged children under his care at the hospital where he worked for 25 years, prosecutors say.
On Tuesday, 15 months after his confession, the former respiratory therapist pleaded guilty to abusing four patients - a boy and three girls, including a 2-year-old toddler.
The plea leaves unanswered how many disabled children he preyed upon. Bleyle, 55, treated 176 patients during the 10 years of his career at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego.
Bleyle told investigators he could only remember the names of four children, prosecutors said, hampering efforts to identify more victims.
"We will never know how many victims there were in this case," said Deputy District Attorney Laura Gunn.
Bleyle was arrested after investigators found tens of thousands of pornographic images on his computer, including photographs he took of himself abusing his victims.
Some of them were comatose, and two of the four identified children have since died, according to Gunn.
Under a plea agreement, Bleyle admitted to eight counts of forcible lewd acts upon a child and four counts of exhibiting a minor in pornography - a dramatic reduction from the total 33 pornography counts originally charged.
Bleyle agreed to a sentence of 45 years and eight months, and was ordered by Superior Court Judge Kenneth K. So to serve at least 85 percent of the time in prison, even with credit for good behavior. He could have been sentenced up to 165 years if he had been convicted on all counts in a jury trial.
Prosecutors said they made a deal in part because they were anxious to spare one of Bleyle's victims. "He'll be 95 before he even sees a parole officer," Gunn said.
When So asked Bleyle, who has been jailed since his arrest how he pleaded, Bleyle replied, "Guilty, your honor."

Here’s hoping Big Bubba needs a new cell _itch.
Just when I’m feeling bad about the evil among us, someone like you comes along and restores my faith in humanity. Thank you! I can’t fully agree, because I don’t think Big Bubba deserves to be rewarded, but I certainly appreciate the sentiment. Too bad we can’t find a way to provide the experience to Wayne, without rewarding some other piece of excrement.

And science uses kids’ cells, aborts them, stores them in liquid hydrogen, dissects them, renames them “fetus” and embryo and we are surprised that these things happen?
I guess some of us are surprised. I’m not. But I’m no less disgusted.

We used to have more sense than to leave men alone with children.
We used to have more sense than to leave men alone with children
I think that should be “just any men.” Some men can be trusted with children, but we used to require that trustworthiness be established first. Not any more. It would be politically incorrect to question anyone’s sexual behavior.
Skin the guy alive and throw him in a vat of salt water or lemon juice.
Men don’t make good nurses especially for children. What kind of a man wants to be a nurse and why? Why would anyone be alone in a room long enough to assault a child much less a man who likes to nurse children?
I took my girlfriend to the emergency room and the male nurse asked me to help undress her as a chaperon...she didn’t want me to see her naked anymore than she wanted a male nurse who needed a chaperon.
We used to have better sense.
Male doctors are never alone with children or women.
That’s the spirit! How ‘bout we dip him in lemon juice, then roll him in rock salt, then back to the lemon juice, lather, rinse, repeat.
I would never have a teenage boy babysitter.
Why is this creature of satan still breathing oxygen?
When I was younger, every doctor I saw was a man, and I was alone with every one of them. Nothing untoward ever happened.
Because we’re tolerant. Tolerance sucks.
