Weston · Veronica Pita recently traveled from Venezuela to South Florida just to give birth to her son and guarantee that he grows up a U.S. citizen.
Worried that President Hugo Chavez may claim guardianship rights over children, dozens of Venezuelan women have traveled to South Florida in recent months to give birth, local doctors say.
The women generally arrive on tourist visas when they are seven months pregnant and return home six weeks after delivery.
Most say they think their children's U.S. citizenship will exempt them from future Venezuelan government measures. Others say they want their children to enjoy the benefits of U.S. citizenship should the family eventually move here.

While I feel sorry for people living under dictatorships, this shows the absurdity of our immigration laws. Get a brain, president Bush, and Congress!
We need to demand that the laws be changed on anchor babies. only children of US citizens born in the US should have automatic citizenship.
If I lived in Venezuela, given what’s happening, given that it might go really bad, knowing what happened in 1938, knowing that I could get a visitors visa...bet your arse I’d do exactly the same. Might be the only way you could get out of a death-sentence for the kid...if the country goes boink.
Cheap acts. A citizen isn’t a citizen just because they were born here but a citizen is one that is willing to sacrifice everything in the name of liberty, to become one with the rest of us, to speak English and make an impact in the community. The US shouldn’t be a nipple for the world. The laws must be changed.

These are people of some means...they’re not sneaking across the border. They obviously have some brains, too. And they’re going back home. They’re buying insurance for their progeny. I give them high marks. Not typical of the folks who’re causing us problems...helping themselves to a teet by pushing somone else off it.

This issue will not be decided until a clear interpretation of the 14th Amendment has been codified by the United States Supreme Court.
But bear in mind that the Court cannot just issue opinions "out of the air". There must be cases before it upon which it will rule.
I think the Court could be forced into doing so. Here's how:
This will require the cooperation of sympathetic civic officials in one or more states (hopefully 3 in separate U.S. Federal Districts) who are absolutely willing to go to the mat on the issue and who will not lose their resolve as the case progresses through the court system. (As an aside, the Court might choose to ignore a "test case" from a single district, but would probably not be able to do so if cases sprung up from multiple districts.)
Here's how such test cases would be ignited:
I am _presuming_ that for births, birth certificates are issued by the city, municipality, or other governmental authority that has jurisdiction over the location where a birth occurs. Since big-city governments are "illegal friendly", I would think the test cases would have to be ignited from rural areas or small cities that are having problems with illegals.
What must be done is, when a birth occurs to someone who is apparently illegal, authorities must question her. If she admits to being illegal, they must issue a birth certificate that specifically states that the newborn shall not be considered an American citizen. The certificate should clearly state something to the effect of, say, "non-citizen birth on American soil".
Of course, the issuance of a "non-citizen birth certificate" will be immediately challanged by civil rights groups, perhaps even by government officials on higher levels. This is to be expected.
The local officials must stand their ground, for - of course - they will be brought to court. And thus, the case (hopefully, multiple cases) will be generated, and progress through the system.
We will almost certainly lose at the trial level, but again, this is to be expected, and welcomed, for we WANT the issue to be appealed "upward".
And we must keep the heat up as the case progresses through the courts. With each loss, we must keep pushing it higher, and eventually, it will reach the high court.
I would not be foolish enough to speculate on how the Court would rule. But it has ruled in previous instances that _some_ babies born on American soil are NOT citizens (i.e., births to foreign diplomats).
I think we have a fighting chance to win. Even if we lose, it will clarify the issue once and for all, and perhaps the loss, combined with increasing anger about the illegal flood from native Americans will force Congress to consider a Constitutional Amendment to correct the 14th Amendment.
I have yet to see posted by ANYone a solution on how to correct the wrongly-interpreted 14th Amendment. I believe that the course I have outlined above - the ad-hoc issuance of "non-citizen" birth certificates, and the Court test that would follow - could do just that. (Remember, you read it here first!)

1)Venezuelan elections are neither free nor fair.
2)Not all Venezuelans voted for him.
I think it’s a safe bet that those anchor-baby tourists,
fearing Chavez’ tyranny didn’t vote for him.
Actually, only certain people voted for Chavez, namely the impoverished masses of Venezuela. In general though, middle class and upper class people (translated, people who had a decent standard of living pre-Chavez) did not vote for him.
Chavez is a demagogue, he relies on the votes of the ignorant impoverished masses to stay in power, and he does it by railing against those who have. Just like Huey Long, George Wallace, and all the various other populist leaders that have come and gone.
Venezuela is about to tip over, because at some point, all of Chavez’s opponents, who are from the classes of society that well, don’t live in shantytowns are going to get sick of it. Like in Chile in the 70s.
A lot of Filipinos and Saudi Arabians (and of course Mexicans and Central Americans) do the same thing.
Chavez treats all Venezuelans the same, rich or poor. One of these days he’ll get his.
It isn't good and shouldn't be approved of whether or not they are rich or poor, intelligent or idiots.
