A theory, via e-mail:
Actually, Chertoff said something even more interesting yesterday. A yet unanswered question is Why is the open borders lobby pushing for amnesty? After all, they had it pretty good with no federal enforcement.
Chertoff and Kyl both seem to have answered that question recently, Kyl in his Wall Street Journal interview and Chertoff on Fox News yesterday: because businesses are starting to worry about efforts to enforce immigration laws at the local level. One state in the vanguard of that effort is Kyls (and McCains) home state of Arizona, where the legislature has passed numerous laws (usually vetoed) on the issue, and where the public voted for Prop 200 back in 2004.
To me that says something far more ominous than that Congress is being disingenuous or naïve on the matter. Far from simple being empty promises, this amnesty bill is actually a blatant attempt to head off any attempts at enforcement at all. After all, states and cities cant deny services or enforce laws against illegals if the government makes them all legal.
And we all know what will happen on the enforcement front: Congress will take out a loan to buy amnesty, promising payment in the form of enforcement. Within weeks, however, Congress will file for moral bankruptcy, and get to keep their amnesty while never paying back a dime's worth of enforcement

I’d rather have people like Chertoff calling me a “bigot”, than neighors calling me “gringo”. Or “infadel”.
Party members generally gained few advantages over non-Party citizens. Officeholders were more fortunate in this regard. Just as there was a graduated scale of the power to fill office, there was a similar scale regarding access to privileges and to goods that were not widely available. In a deficit economy like that of the Soviet Union, access to scarce goods was a real bonus, and those who held official positions gained such access. The level and range of availability differed according to the level of position one occupied, but because all of the leading positions were determined by the Party, it was the Party that determined who got access to such goods. The Party was thus the key to access to privilege in the Soviet Union.

Why do open border lobbies push for amnesty while borders leak like sieves? (hint: new dem voters)
Excellent observation that bears repeating. The growing grassroots movements around the country to crack down on illegal aliens would be nullified to a large extent by legalizing their status. This is no longer a border state problem.
I’m not buying the ‘business wants this’ argument for the simply reason I’ve never read of a single business that supports it.
Never. Anywhere. At any time.
I’m a business owner, with holdings in multiple states. Thats absolutely positively never once come up in any context.
And I’ll note nobody has ever identified a single company that does.
Beware anonymous claims folks. Haven’t the past seven years or so taught us that lesson?

I’m a member, sorry, no ceegar there to be found.
I agree with you. Very few businesses can actually use these people, and big corps don’t think it is worth the risk, as they have deep pockets. Most of these people are off the books self-employed.

Sooo..business is ganging up with the Senate to screw the little guys...well who’da thunk?!!!!!
While I think you have a reasonable point about making sure that ones claims are backed up, there certainly are at least some businesses (particularly in agriculture) that want this.
Thanks for the ping and links. Great post, thanks. BTTT!
Thanks......I don’t get Laura Ingraham until evening and just now heard Sen. DeMint on her show who said that we the people need to keep the heat up and on congress.
Why do we even need a federal government? I don’t think things are the way they were intended.
